Nittany Freethought meeting - Irving's Thurs at 6pm, and other stuff

From: Dave D.
Sent on: Monday, March 17, 2008 3:38 PM
Hi all,

This is a reminder about our meeting this Thursday...again at Irving's at 6:00 pm.

Also, I just remembered I said I'd send out a few things at the last meeting:
I'd also like to see if there's any interest in two upcoming events:
  • The first is next Wednesday, the First Freedom First group is hosting a simulcast in national theaters on the Separation of Church and State.  Some info about it is below.  I'm planning on driving down to Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon to attend if anyone would like to car pool down.
  • The other is a movie, Expelled, that seems to be about how alternate points of view have been expelled from schools and is narrated by Ben Stein.  I expect it will be the same old claims that it's unfair to not teach bad science along with good science, but I'd still like to see it, assuming it's playing somewhere locally.  It's opening on April 18th.  Here's a link w/a trailer:

Hopefully see you all Thursday,

National Simulcast For Church-State Separation

Celebrities, Religious Liberty Heroes Headline National Simulcast For Church-State Separation

Don't miss your chance to be part of the action!

Actors, musicians and comedians will join church-state community members in 37 theaters across the country on Wednesday evening, March 26, 2008, to put church-state separation on the national agenda during the 2008 election season.
Times and locations vary.

Join others at this gathering to learn about the threats to church-state separation and to demand that candidates for elected office answer questions about key issues dealing with individual freedom. Ten questions to ask candidates that have a direct impact on Americans' lives will be featured.

Peter Coyote, celebrated Hollywood actor and filmmaker, will emcee the program, which will include such special guests as The Bacon Brothers (featuring actor Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael), actors Michael J. Fox; Jack Klugman; James Whitmore; Wendie Malick; Dan Lauria; and Catherine Dent; comedian and Air America host Marc Maron; singer/songwriter Catie Curtis and satirist Roy Zimmerman.

In addition, Americans who have fought for individual freedom against great odds will tell their stories. Guests include Bryan and Christy Rehm (who fought creationism in Dover, Pa. science classes), Matthew LaClair (a New Jersey high schooler who exposed religious indoctrination at his school), Roberta Stewart (an Afghanistan War widow who fought for equal rights for Wiccan veterans), Dr. Susan Wicklund (who wears a bullet-proof vest to provide reproductive services in underserved areas) the Rev. Madison Shockley (pastor and reproductive rights advocate) David and Ryan Altoon (who oppose fundamentalist proselytism at U.S. military academies) Melinda "Lindy" Maddox (who successfully sued Alabama "Commandments" Judge Roy Moore) and Susan Jacoby (author of The Age of American Unreason).

Don't miss out on this special event! Go to to reserve your seat now.
