Safe Creative Power Dance Improvisation

Meet at the covered front porch in front of and to the left of the Tucson Music and Dance Academy. North of Valero Gas Station & adjoining Taco Shop! Please do not enter the lobby of the Academy.

This dance studio has a raised floor(the best) and air conditioning. It is offered for free through our member Kirsten. She teaches at the school. Thanks Kirsten!!! We will have a warm up in the smaller studio. Then we will move into the bigger studio with mirrors and bars to start our session.

The facilitator will start by, as a group, thinking up (some will be provided) random situations and roles for each dancer solo or group. The roles and situations will be very general. So you will be able to be what ever character you like within this framework. You will then express how your character would behave in these situations. So if you are an archetypal figure such as Astarte, you would then explore her reactions to other characters and situations. If you are a ball room dancer you would react accordingly through movement. We will explore solo dance and group dance.So you can be who you like. We will then share our movement if we wish with the group.

Over time we will find some movement really fits us, some movement really intrigues and speaks to us. This will develop as our dance, our choreography. We will want to repeat it and learn it. In a few months we will have an intimate performance finale to celebrate our discoveries.

We are open to other ideas on improvisation techniques as well, so please share and speak up. There really is no leader per se. We would like to share facilitation of the group in a rotation. This idea is just to get us going.
