Formerly known as the Northern Virginia Ukulele Ensemble (NVUE).  Effective 1 Jul 2013, now known as The Northern Virginia Ukulele Society (NVUS - eNVy US) -- neat name!  We still carry the name NVUE but as a subgroup under NVUS.

We are a fun group for all levels of ukulele experience.  Our regular monthly club schedule has something for everyone:

2nd Sunday Beginner Chords and Strums 2:15pm followed by Beginner Group Lesson 3-5pm

4th Sunday Beginner Chords and Strums 2:15pm followed by Ukulele Jam 3-5pm and Ukulele Open Mic 6-8pm

Who are we and what do we do?
========================================================================

Meet with other local uke players to exchange chords and tabs, teach each other techniques, play and sing for one another, songwrite, and have jam sessions! Never played or haven't played the ukulele much -- no worries, we've split the monthly meetups to accomodate pure beginners and beyond pure beginners.

This group's sharing goals are to:

  • Cater to all levels of music ability from beginner to virtuoso (none in our group yet at the virtuoso level, unless they've been hiding in the shadows).
  • Learn, or try to learn how to play a variety of songs -- so more than just songs from Hawaii but also songs like those found in the UkeGotToBeKidding Song Book ( click here) which has a few Beatles songs among many others.

Because we've been asked to host and plan or participate in an ukulele festival and a concert in 2010 and again in 2011, we started the process last year (2010) to incorporate so we can pursue the IRS 501(c) non-profit status to better support the NVUE members, the local ukulele community, and other ukulele artists, local and visiting, to:

  • To stimulate interest, promote, educate, socialize, and demonstrate the musical arts surrounding the ukulele and generally to further the appreciation of the ukulele, including without limitation by means of educational programs, workshops, concerts and similar events and activities.
  • To be a social organization for the exchange of experience, knowledge and camaraderie relating to the ukulele.
  • To engage in affairs of interest to the membership so long as these activities are otherwise consistent with the Corporation’s nonprofit tax-exempt status.
  • To promote favorable relationships with the public and other music enthusiast clubs or organizations.

So,...

Don't have an ukulele but looking to get one to come join us? The Kamaka site says, "As our friend Jake Shimabukuro tells his fans, beginners should learn to play on the highest quality ukulele possible. Beginners tend to get easily frustrated if their ukuleles do not stay in tune, or if the intonation is off. If your child later decides she is not interested in the ukulele, there is a huge secondary market for our used instruments. Used Kamaka ukuleles are in high demand, especially if they are in original or mint condition." (used with permission of Kamaka Ukulele, 16 Mar 2009, source: http://www.kamakahawaii.com/faqs.html)

Lastly, we only ask you follow a few simple rules (see rules).

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
