Intro to Socket IO

Hey All,

I'm excited to bring our next meetup based on Socket IO.

We'll be going over the background, benefits of websockets and of course, go into some examples of implementing a socket IO in applications.

Come learn, share, hack on socket IO with us 9/25/13 at drumbi pad.

We'll have snacks, and drinks available.

    Socket.IO http://socket.io/ (by Farsheed http://meetup.com/Node-JS-OC/me... , some partial notes)
    *a Node.js implementation of (WebSockets http://meetup.com/Node-JS-OC/ev... )
    *To demonstrate Socket.IO , he live-codes {"name":"mysimplechatserver","version":"0.0.1","dependencies":{"socketio":"latest","jade":"latest","express":"latest","color:~0.0.4"}, ..} (the package.json file, format explained at http://package.json.nodejitsu.c... )

*some typos in that package.json but it gives the gist.
*uses Sublime editor http://en.wikipedia.o... , which proves especially useful for getting .jade tab-indenting correct.
*Farsheed finds Jade the best page formatter; he asks & finds 1 of the 8 non-Drumbi attendees already uses it.
*Hopefully he'll post code (Reply here)
*He's ended presentation, now a breakout session.

WebSockets by Eddy (some partial notes)
    * topic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We...
    * this does client-server communication, different from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We... (now supported by Chrome & Firefox) for peer-to-peer browser-browser communication
    *very efficient & reliable
*supported by all modern web browsers except say older Firefox & older IE (<6).
*Some firewalls block websockets but for this & speed often better to use https.
*Eddy will post link to slides here (just click Reply).

    When to have repeat meetings?
A few min ago, I do a quick survey; this is #of weeks between meetings and # of votes, with everyone voting 1x: I get 1:1, 2:4, 4:5, 8:0 (10 people in attendance & voting). Eddie also proposed every 3 weeks but not voted as it is tough for people to schedule on their calendars (though I still think is worth considering). This leans more towards every 2 weeks, but because of the upcoming holidays and because this is new (and 1/3rd of RSVPs showing up) so decide to do meetings every 4th Wed (same as today).
