JavaScript Tricks/Tips + Intro to Node/Socket.io

Attention good people of Cleveland!

After a brief season of meditation, we are summoning all JavaScript gurus, ninjas, padawans and code monkeys to the next gathering of the Cleveland JavaScript and Cleveland Node.js meetup groups!

We're bringing together both groups into a single place for a one-time special event - to rap and groove about all things JavaScript!

The Facts

We will meet on Monday, May 20, 2012 at 6:30pm at Hyland Software located at 28500 Clemens Road in Westlake, OH.

The awesome people at Hyland have once again graciously offered their support to the growing Cleveland technology community. They've made available their giant conference room with three projectors, audio and internet connectivity. We will have pizza and refreshments on hand.

The Presentations

We will have two presentations and a hands-on, collaborative coding session.  Fo'shizzle!

(1) Dan Shultz - JavaScript so easy... even a Caveman could do it.

Ask yourself:

  • Is your JavaScript de jour callback soup?
  • Does your event loop feel like the incredible mousetrap?
  • Does your javascript leak memory like a sieve?
  • Want to write JavaScript that is easy to understand, easy to maintain and doesn’t make your coworkers cry?

You are not alone. Dan Shultz will walk through how to leverage prototype inheritance, context binding, “modularization” and functional techniques to write better javascript code that even a caveman can understand.

* Note: This talk was on the agenda for the last meetup but due to a conflict, was unable to be covered. We're bringing it back yo!

(2) Michael Uzquiano - NodeJS, Socket.io + Hands-on coding

Michael Uzquiano will give a brief presentation on Socket.io and how it's being used with NodeJS within Cloud CMS. We'll cover the basics and then dive down into the code. Bring your laptops. We'll break out into small teams (or work as an individual) to build some basic Socket.io applications!

This will be a fun session for folks who are new to NodeJS or new to Socket.io. If you're seasoned at either one, come along and coach someone!

We hope to see you there!

Good stuff. Got down into the details. I had to leave early but wish I could have stayed longer.
