Wilderness Skills Practice Outing sponsored by the Sierra Club

Lets learn how to navigate in the outdoors. Bring water, lunch, and layered clothing, compass (if you have one), personal supplies & meet at 10 a.m. @ Oak Slough parking lot on Jelly’s Ferry Road. Learn how to orient yourself to a map using compasses provided by one experienced in orienteering.  Families, individuals 12 or older will be teamed up to pick up better skills to be "street smart" in the wilderness.  We'll do a compass course; people will team up and take bearings and walk distances. Expert will provide compasses, rulers, map of area.  Hidden envelopes will be located, a prize awarded. Expect to walk less than 4 miles on flat or rolling hills in open river bottom land.  Also learn about no-trace hiking and camping basics. Rain date: Sat. Feb 22. Leader: Marti Weidert, [masked] email:  [masked].

My old compass seemed to guide me to the left of where I needed to go. I would not have known that without Rob's help. Thanks Rob. Time for a new compass.

Rob Johnson did a wonderful service for all of us; and you were all great participants.
    Thank you. Marti

Sadly I have to stay back and watch over the dog who was poisoned a few days ago. Should be a beautiful day for this activity. Thanks for putting it on.

I have 18 names reserved as of today; so Emily and Patty Ringer, it looks like there is room for your "plus 1" invitees. (until 8:30 a.m.: 474-4300, after 9:30 a.m. today: [masked].) Marti

WILLIAM, you are in and make the last person signed up to participate, and you are welcome!. We should have fun it will be sunny. Windbreaker, snack, sack lunch, water a good idea, and sturdy shoes good for muddy uneven ground with ground squirrel holes.

Hey marti, is the event full? If so I'll step down n make other plans. Thanks~

Emily, I'm waiting to hear from you re the name of the "1" coming with you. This outing must be limited because there will be 4 groups of 5 people, or 5 groups of four persons, each group of which will begin the walk about 5 minutes after the preceding one.
The walk should take about 4 hours more or less.
There are many ground squirrel holes in the soil which will be wet, so sturdy footwear strongly recommended.

I have a Boy Scout Klondike at Eskimo Hill Friday night, Saturday and Saturday night. Probably will be little to no snow but the event happens anyway.

I am correcting the map: I've moved the red "X" on the map to show where we are to meet accurately: near the junction of Jelly's Ferry Road and Saron Fruit Ranch Road: OAK SLOUGH TRAILHEAD.
I need Emily (who has signed up) to give me the name of the "1" extra she's bringing, so I can have an accurate list of names. Patrick, there is room for you; I hope you come,
because the list has not reached its limit.
Let's keep an eye on the weather for Sat.Feb22nd! Marti 474-4300

Let me know if there too many people are signed up so I can make other plans. Thanks!

I adjusted the map to show the location on Balls Ferry Road south of Gover Road and the fish hatchery. It may not be the exact place, but it is closer then it was. I don't know how many times one needs to cross Battle Creek, but go the distance Marti says and you should be there.

Tuesday night update (weather): rain is supposed to be heavy on Saturday. Therefore I am postponing my orienteering outing until Feb 22nd, hopefully it will be dry. Patricia Seaton, ok.
Any questions call me Marti 474-4300

I would join in on the 22nd if it's moved and if there is room since I'm the last one to RSVP.

  • Patricia Seaton

Oops - did my RSVP make too many of us? I'd love to do this. I took a class in orienteering at SRJC seversl years ago.

Sounds like fun, Marti, and educational!

Can't make it the 22nd. Someone can have my spot. Is it for sure canceled, because I don't want to change my RSVP if there's a chance of it being held.

If it is forecast to rain Saturday February 8 before we are done with our outing , the date is moved to Feb. 22.
Envelopes with cards in them will be at the way points.
It'll be like a poker run.
Bring a trail snack, water, and a sack lunch. Prizes will be awarded in the parking lot at end of hike. Marti Weidert

If you have a clear compass, that will be useful to bring. Rob Johnson, our instructor, has compasses and maps for those who don't have a compass. Marti Weidert, Shasta Group Sierra Club hostess

Kristine Hiemstra, the Oak Slough BLM trailhead is the parking lot north of the Jellys Ferry BLM old bridge trailhead, a couple of miles. You can't miss it because opposite from Oak Slough trailhead, is a street sign saying SARON FRUIT COLONY Rd. , which leads west to apricot orchards near the river. Marti 474-4300

Dir: From Anderson, allow time to drive 7 miles to Balls Ferry Boat Ramp. to get there is take Balls Ferry Rd., turn right on Ash Creek Rd., take it over the Sacramento River. Immediately turn right onto Gover Rd. You'll drive doth 7.9 miles to our meet point. You'll see a sign directing to Coleman National Fish Hatchery. Drive south along Gover Rd., , passing Riverview Restaurant, passing Hatchery Rd., passing Gover Ranch, (road becomes Jellys Ferry Rd.) crossing Battle Creek, you'll see a black angus herd, a big barn..You'll view Sac. River on your right, then its not far to OAK SLOUGH TRAILHEAD on your left. You will have traveled 7.9 miles from the junction of AshCreek Rd. & Gover Road.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This outing is limited to 20 participants. There are now 19 signed up. I can't take any more. Does anyone know how to notify meet up that I can't take any more? Marti Weidert, leader 474-4300.
If it rains, the rain date for this outing will be Sat. Feb 22nd.

Haha, map puts this in the middle of the river, in town! Is this the trailhead parking lot just north of the old one lane bridge on Jelly's Ferry? Like you were gonna hike out to Massacre Flats?

  • Laurie H

Is the map accurate? It doesn't look like it's in the Bend Area or at least where I was expection.

I know I'm going to enjoy this and learn something as well!
