I have been particularly interested in the history of Germany before WWII because I am a Holocaust survivor. I have read about the Weimar culture, the time of Bertolt Brecht's Berlin, the history of some of the people of that era, etc. I have not read as much in depth about it because it has been a very difficult subject for me to face. I have also read Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking", and I am finishing "The Little Book" by Selden Edwards. I read Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa in Spanish and have enjoyed Steven Bach's book "Leni" as it is a fresh look at her life (Leni Riefenstahl, Hitler's movie maker). I have not been able to get through Erik Larson's "In the Garden of the Beasts", which I started recently. As you can see, my interests are varied and they could be classified in the realms of psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, etc.
Conversations about losing a life partner & beginning a new life, are we living in a "democracy or a polyarchy" in our country?, are we going in the direction of WWIII?, where is our country going?, etc., etc. (I have often wondered if what happened in Germany could happen here).
I am a resident of Santa Rosa with a variety of interests who sometimes does not find sufficient intellectual stimulation available ... I am looking forward to meet more members of this group.
I have gone to one meeting and I am interested in attending future meetings because the discussions were very good and the group extremely interesting. Our organizer is special! He is well prepared, patient, has read a great deal on the subjects he covers and gives excellent references for us to follow-up.
