Peabody Book Club

We are a lively, spirited group of women who love to read and are open to stretching their comfort zone.  Books are selected by a rotation of participants who will suggest 3 books and one will be selected by majority vote. The person who chose the book will lead the discussion/questions at that meeting.

Our Book of the Month selection is: The Casual Vacancy- jk rowling

When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…. Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

    Always good conversation

Hi, I am planning to attend and look forward to seeing Betsy and Ruth. I always enjoy Jackie's conversation, but please no guilt- (unless of course you signed up and are a no show, which Jackie is NOT !!). My feeling is that one does not have to like a book in order to have a stimulating conversation. Even though I did not like her style that much, I think there is a lot of meat related to the social issues and how they touch our own country and lives. As long as there are 3 of us planning to attend- the group meets, if either of you cancel, I will cancel.... but I think there is lots to discuss- like similarities in values in this book and what Rowlings expressed in the harry potter books.

If I absolutely hated the book, I would not have read it and cancelled attending myself, so I do understand how some of you felt. I actually got into it about halfway through and although I can't say I enjoyed reading about low life, rape and drug addicts, I found it absorbing!

I plan on going, even though I commented negatively on the book.

Hi Ladies, I've gotten past the guilt - I really have nothing to contribute tonight, so I'm canceling.

I got through the book, but I hardly remember who did what! I really don't have much to offer, but I'd feel guilty canceling if others are going. Do you think that it's still worth having the meeting tonight with so few of us attending?

I've tried reading this book and feel it lacks the charm and finesse of her other books....

It seems to be unamimous. So far, no one seems to like this book very much, myself included.

It's reassuring to find that others feel the way I do about the book. I'll do my best to finish it - I keep thinking that it's going to get better.

Sorry to miss this discussion, not able to make the meeting. However I did read it, thought it took a while for me to get into it. So many characters!

Sorry, I am going to pass on this book. Content doesn't appeal to me. I did read her Harry Potter books.
