Land Navigation Course at LBJ/Decatur Grasslands

I'd like to put on a basic land navigation course, teaching map reading, orientation, intersection and resection, etc. I'll have all the maps and equipment.  If you have your own lensatic compass, please bring it.  Make sure to bring water and a flashlight.  We'll start a while before dark, then after it gets dark, we can do a little night land nav, both with a compass and by the stars.

Thanks Michael for putting this together. Was great to try out what we learned while there.

Thanks again, Michael Ray, for taking time out of your schedule to teach us some new land nav skills! We learned a ton, found most of the points along with some copperheads and had a good time!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Maybe we can do more another time.

Where will you all be at 6pm? I'm en route but I am stuck in traffic in my GPS is saying that its gonna take about an hour to get there.

I'm not sure why the map is being stupid, but the coordinates are: 33°22'29.1"N 97°35'01.9"W
    It's the TADRA Point Trailhead.

Overnighters, what are your thoughts about the possible weather situation Saturday night? I plan to camp still, but perhaps in the cab of the truck...everyone still planning to hang?

Also, try to bring a pencil/pen and small notebook/index card.

Because of all the equestrian traffic, I'm going to set up right before you turn into the trailhead. I'll be in a white Ford Escape.

I I love adventure and foul weather gear. Let the good times roll

I am probably going to be out tomorrow, unfortunately. I slammed a door on a finger last night resulting in a fracture and 5 stitches. If it's not hurting too bad, I will still come.

There are supposed to be a lot of people coming, but I only have a few aids to use for the course to share. So, if anyone wants to get their own stuff to use, here is what you should get: a lensatic compass and a 1:24000 scale map protractor. You can usually get them at a big outdoors store or Army/Navy store.

Will we need a map, as well?

      April 24, 2014

    • Michael R.

I will have a few to use. I doubt you would have time to get them now. You would normally order them online.

I'm in. But I need the course to find where we are meeting. Please post a map. When I click on TADRAPoint I get a map of Haltom City.

Would love to do this but this is a bad time for me. Will you do it again in the future?

    March 16, 2014

  • Michael R.

If there are enough people who want it later, I'm sure I could do it again.

I and my plus one would be very interested in this session, but April is a bad month for us. I hope you can do this again in June or later.
