The Mystical Significance of the Om Mantra: A Talk by Swami Yogeshwarananda

The sacred syllable OM has deep spiritual significance for many, who regard it as embodying the primordial cosmic vibration which sustains the manifest universe on all levels - material, subtle and spiritual. Often expressed as the triad AUM, in this form it may represent the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming and deep sleep) where it points us towards the mystical "fourth state" - turiya - which is the source and support of the other three.

To speak on this subject we are pleased once again to welcome Swami Yogeshwarananda, whose previous talks were highly appreciated by those who attended. Born in Sri Lanka, the Swami is a monk in the ancient Shankaracharya order in India. Since the 1960s he has lived the contemplative life of a hermit, some of it spent in caves in the Himalayas. He has augmented meditative practices with a deep study of traditional Vedantic scriptures. In more recent years, the Swami has travelled around the world, giving talks in the UK, USA, Europe and Australia. His teachings endeavour to point the way for the diligent seeker to find his or her own path to spiritual understanding.

The Swami is the author of the following publications:

"The Wholistic View of Life"

"Mind and the State of No-Mind"

"The Divine Virtues"

"The Yoga of Understanding"

"Wisdom in Action"

I was very reflective when I left, on my drive home I viewed the world I was observing as rather wonderful. For a short time I felt very at one. It was more of a breathing, feeling sense than intellectual. Again, for that short time there was no need to 'understand'. Wonderful!!

The third time I have experienced the Swami and the third time I have been left with profound ideas that will require a period of digestion. I think David Maddams' comments sum the talk up perfectly.

An excellent talk by the Swami, who once again demonstrated his gift of being able to convey profound ideas with characteristic humour!

Unfortunately something has cropped up at work which means I won't be able to make the talk as hoped. I believe Josie will still meet people as planned at the corner of M&S at 7.20. Hope it's a great talk; I'm sad to be missing it. Hopefully I'll get to meet everyone at another event soon. Emma

There is a small donation at the end of about £2. Which isn't too extravagant. If you park in the public car park next door you need to buy a ticket for up to midnight, else you'll get a parking fine. Most of the rest of the town is free to park after 6.30pm.
