Devil's Path Traverse - 25miles

Details

REQUIREMENT: Take note that this is big hike and a very strenuous one. For the group to be successful, this hike requires strong hikers, a lot of preparation and solid teamwork. This hike is only open to regular members who have done the required hikes noted below and have shown preparedness during our latest hikes.

When all participants are at good hiking levels, it eases up the work of the team, and makes the hike fun and safe for all. Please carefully assess the hike plan and your hiking preparedness before you RSVP on this hike. You must have recent experience with our longshanks or similar big hikes to participate on this one. Prior experience of the RD/24, SBM/24, Escarpment/24, or similar is required.

RSVP in the waiting list is not guaranteed a spot unless qualified as YES. Members with history of no-shows and flip-flops need not join.

Difficulty: Super Strenuous
Distance: 25+ miles
Vertical Rise: 9,600+ ft
Estimated Time: 13 hours or more!!
Map/s: Northeastern Catskill Trails (NY-NJTC Map#41)
Trail Blazes: Red Blazed Devil's Path

SHUTTLE: *** READ *** READ *** READ
Please indicate in your RSVP if you are driving or carpooling with someone. Our shuttle plan requires having 2 hikers per car (for a 4-person car). Any car/driver with more passengers will be taken out. Hikers with no shuttle arrangement will be taken out. Deadline for the RSVP comments will be the weekend before, Sunday 5/13. Those who don't have RSVP comments/shuttle by the deadline will be taken out. Final details (including rendezvous point) will be emailed Monday of that week, 5/14.

RAIN DATES: The hike date may change the last minute depending on weather conditions. We may do it on Sunday, the following day, if Saturday's weather will turn out iffy. The following weekend will also be a rain date, in case we have to cancel the original scheduled weekend of the hike. So be flexible.

"Early settlers believed that the Devil himself inhabited the Catskills and indeed had favorite haunts where he roamed. According to legend, the cloven feet of the Devil made it possible for him alone to traverse this steep and sometimes dangerous terrain... And thus this area became known as the Devil's Path."

The Devil's Path is a 25+ mile long trail that traverses six mountains over 3,500-ft (Indian Head, Twin, Sugarloaf, Plateau, Hunter, West Kill), with the deepest notches between mountains in the Catskills. The result will be super strenuous hike with huge elevation gain/loss many times across - which they say will result to a total of 8,000-9,000ft of elevation gain! This hike will test not only our strengths but also our will, for only the insane (like the devil!) will even try to hike this in one day.

We did this hike last 10/30/2010 in 15 hours of hiking. https://www.meetup.com... (https://www.meetup.com/NortheastHighPeaks/calendar/14960279/)

Timing, camping or sleepover, carpool, food drops and bailout/exit points are some of the items we need to work out. So keep posted.
