Shawl Hugs

Details

Knitting/Crochet Workshop led by Anne McCrudden

This is a group for people who are making, or who would like to make shawls for the Shawl Hugs project. Shawls are made for people who are going through a tough time - they may be experiencing physical or mental health problems, going through bereavement or struggling in some way.

This group is suitable for absolute beginners through to experienced crafters. There will be yarn, needles and patterns available as well as help on hand for people who want to begin knitting or crocheting. Shawl Hugs is not just about making shawls, but making them by crafting love and healing into the stitches, so that the people who receive them will feel hugged and comforted by them.

There will also be an opportunity to be creative in making other things to give to others who need a bit of support. All kind ideas welcome! Suggestions include comfort items for children, twiddlemitts for dementia sufferers, stress balls for teenagers, and hearts for everyone! This is a creative group focusing on people's strengths and generosity of spirit.

Bring with you: If you have circular needles and yarn that would be great. Would also be lovely to inspire others with your works in progress! We will also use this time to talk about who might be recipients, how to wrap and distribute the shawls, and how to encourage others to be involved.

"Shawls can be tangible symbols of love and support. They can be warm hugs of happiness and empathy; a place of escape to relax, rest and renew; something to hold on to when all else is slipping away. Wrapping another in a shawl made of your loving thoughts is a gift not only for the person who receives it, but for yourself as well.”
