Why are you working for/with tech startups?

I've spent my career in software development for both small start-ups and large corporations here in Orange County. The past three years I've been working for a start-up in Waterloo, Canada, helping them move from early phase to commercial. I've also done work for other early-stage start-ups here in the US (mostly here in Orange County). I love innovative technologies, particularly semantic technologies, and enjoy working to get start-ups off the ground and turned into sustainable businesses.

What problem are you trying to solve?

I am focused on start-ups in the field of semantic technologies and applications that use such technologies for things like content filtering, personalization, search augmentation or software agents. My goal is to help people have better access to the massive amounts of data that exist today in such a way that they can use that data to improve their day-to-day life. I'd love to see intelligent agents become a reality, and to do that will require innovative new ways to add meaning to data and provide the right data for the task(s) at hand.

Describe startup life.

Start-ups are all about balance. You have to have differentiation -- something unique -- but you need to tie it to a broader ecosystem and make it practical for people to use from Day 1. You have to run your start-up as a business with your customers in mind in all you do. It can't just be about the technology. You have to have a team of talented co-workers who are able to do various jobs, collaborate seamlessly, argue (in a nice way) about the important things, but work together to get the job done -- fast. You can't be afraid of change, but you can't change so often that you never do anything, so you have to commit and deliver as well. It is exciting, incredibly frustrating, difficult and fun.

I consult in the field of semantic technologies (semtech). I have been part of semtech-related start-ups both here in Orange County and in the Toronto, Canada area. Prior to that I led innovative new business ventures inside a major corporation.
