LA has this type of meeting, well attended apparently, why not in OC???
I am only interested in developing an Android App (using Eclipse) and would like to sit down with others so we can learn together. Thursday evening is best for me, possibly once per month?

Delighted u're taking initiative here (nice!) but we've already got hacking once a month on Thu evening, as upcoming http://meetup.com/OCA...
; there u see "M0TIDD: Activities .. constructive hacking including coding/programming & building apps" plus the "recurring community meetup agenda M0TAGN" says specifically "M0SNLV: Producing, especially Doing Real Projects." Indeed these our main mtgs are set for a full 4hrs to allow plenty of time for this at the end for this.
*Yes, leaders I & Bill http://meetup.com/OCA...
especially certainly were&are always open to more hacking at mtgs esp than has happened starting ~2012.05, but it seems beyond our control: up to the attendees willingness to actually do it, including staying late as to close 10pm which has always been everyone's option.
*So what are ur concerns? And, if at all possible, how can we fix what we've got w/o starting a new track?

Apparently in reply 2my 1st cmt above, Michael Strong didn't reply here(as we need:2keep the thread together&hv a discussion)but on our upcoming http://meetup.com/OCA...
RSVPing NO (disappointingly)w/RSVP cmt quote(I gave up on hacking after last two meetings and really sorry that my wife has booked me for 12/6. Is this always the first Thursday of the month? If so, I will mark in my calendar. I'm beginning to understand android programming but want to share). Michael S,
*If u "gave up on hacking after last two meetings",then we best need2know that _immediately_, as in ur review of those mtgs,so can we know&explain and/or correct.
**Do u not recall how hard we worked 2tailor the mtgs 2Thursday based on ur request?? Pls post ur reviews as my next cmt details:
*When u wrote this RSVP,I was already replying here asking 4ur reviews:see my next cmt.
**Note each evt cmt can only be 1000 chars max so best to pause for more data coming esp if last seems full.

**Tryin 2guess ur concerns,u bein new,only main mtgs uve attended r our last 2:
***"OCAndroid Main Meetup #61(Android as a controller of other devices)+\Oct 25, 2012" http://meetup.com/OCA...
****No hackin there as no time&Internet as our only 1 (w/o wifi (very serious)+Bill being late 1hr).
*****Note as we hope every mbr does,u can help fix this(4this+ur every mtg w/anyone!)by insuring u always hv w/u wifi Internet u can share --as announced on every mtg: see upcoming http://meetup.com/OCA...
pt M15TNK linking2 http://1.JotHere.com/...
***"OCAndroid Main Meetup #60(NOVEL USES OF ANDROID, as TV entertainment center PC)+\Aug 27, 2012" http://meetup.com/OCA...
****there we may hv had time 4some hacking&did a little
***As Meetup.com asks, kindly post ur review of these 2 mtgs, esp noting any shortcomings u saw in ea u no see fixable in that series, esp as they seem2 motivate u 2make this suggestion now of a new event series.
0 · November 29
*I cd but reluctant 2add a new mtg track(this)
**from
***fear of fragmenting our already low attendance
***hving tried recently(as late as 2012.04)but w/attendance peterin out: look@ http://meetup.com/OCA...
:u'll see we had mtgs just 4hacking,+even mtgs just4Users,but attendance declined,so we combined em w/the main mtg:
****mostly user mtgs as late as "June 25 at 6:00 PM, 2 members attended \ OCAndroid Main Meetup #58(also USER ISSUES, as LOW-COST TABLETS)"
****rt b4 that,pure-user mtgs as late as "April 10 at 7:00 PM, 4 members attended \OCAndroid Users' Meetup 4+" http://meetup.com/OCA...
****also we had pure-developer mtgs,indeed many,as late as "April 23 at 6:00 PM, 4 members attended ..\ OCAndroid Developers Meetup #49" http://meetup.com/OCA...
****rt b4 that, pure hacking mtgs,indeed many,as late as "March 7 at 7:00 PM, 8 members attended \ OCAndroid Hack Night 17" http://meetup.com/OCA...![]()

Programmers sadly seem increasingly less inclined to have local in-person meetings other than presentations and maybe even that, as they can get this on stuff on the web, thus seemingly explaining our low attendance; but praying an additional hacking track wouldn't fragment our already low attendance as it has in the past (see my prior comment) and would be an overall good thing, we could have this meeting track but I would need to know it would be manned but members other than me (I couldn't man it), including in the beginning where it would have to be routinely & solidly manned (lead) even while attendance was low to see that attendance builds. What % of meetings of this track would you (Michael Strong, and anyone else interested) be willing to lead?

RE ur proposed event desc of "LA has this type of meeting, well attended apparently, why not in OC???"
*Seemingly useful news! Pls "Reply"here w/the exact event listing URLs of ea LA mtg u referring2 so we can look@ em &compare &insure we doing equal or better.
*3ea u attended,include on the listing ur review of it tellin what parts u liked & didn't.
**Note if u didn't RSVP YES b4 the event,u hv 2ask a group leader 2add u as attending so u can post that review.
*As far as "why not in OC"
**Well actually "hacking" IS&long-been here in OCAndroid,see my explanation.
**+note LA historically has ~3x stronger tech Meetup attendance than OC,&it used 2b ~6x until folks like me,&William of http://Meetup.com/OC-...
started fixin it.
**&as far a separate track&more I answered u now in my prior cmts of this thread,now awaitin ur reply,along w/ur reply to this cmt(URLs 2what u like),so then we can insure we're doing&do all that can be done in OC!

Twice, I turned up to attend Thursday evenings at Skypark Circle, doors locked no sign of anyone. Obviously there is a communication problem. Using web sources for Android programming is hard work. Much of it is dated and uses old SDK. To learn the overall design issue, the structure of classes and fragments is not really covered. You probably need to study Java in order to be quite clear on variables and objects. Another issue is how android handles strings and integers which obviously relates to declaring variables. Data types, such as EditText? Again significant research is needed to be clear on the relationship between XML and Java. Find a clear description of programming android:onClick=<name
> and onClickListener?

More!! Or debugging? Your program fails to see an id in the layout, eg findViewById has a problem. I have three books on Android, none of which is really useful. I am sick and and tired of "Hello World". My book on Java programming is excellent for variables and objects. Sorting this stuff out is very interesting and time consuming but my time is precious. If you guys can help, I would be really grateful but I realize that the little android device contains a very powerful and complicated OS and to many except the professional the task to learn it may be too daunting!! On the other hand, there may be a business opportunity for evening classes and workshops.

For instance consider this where "v" refers to the view that was clicked, : class MTest extends Activity implements OnClickListener {
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
setContentView(R.layout.
<viewname>); ...
Button b1 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.b1);
Button b2 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.b2);
b1.setOnClickListener(th
is);
b2.setOnClickListener(th
is);
...
}
And then:
@Override
public void onClick(View v) {
switch (v.getId()) {
case R.id.b1:
....
break;
case R.id.b2:
....
break;
}
}
Does "v" refer to the <viewname>?

(continued fr prior cmt)
**Us OCAndroid hv never been non-present 4any of our regular mtgs ever. We r reliable&place our mbr's welfare 1st.
**It sounds like u r mistaking us w/SoCalAndroid (which meets on SkypPark Circle,@SmartSoft). But ~2012.01 (~6mo before u joined us)
***we OCAndroid reversed our endorsing them (we endorse against them) due to trying months to work with them but finding their leadership (only Jefferey Peacock, note last name) not reliably/predictably holding in-person mtgs (as u saw) and in general with Mr. Peacock placing his personal gain (notably his ego, plus his convenience) over best service to mbrs, and seeing his bad attitudes then infect his mbrs (easily swoon by seeing only his technical expertise)
**and since the venue owner didn't want 2 Android groups and was seemingly afraid to confront Jeffrey (who is much bigger & domineering), we stopped meeting there.
**Sorry u had a bad experience there; u experienced just the tip of the iceberg of why we left.
