The Future of UGC and the News

Please note:  we cannot accommodate ANY walk-in registration.  Please register by noon today.  We are very close to capacity. See security requirements below.

The last few years have seen a huge proliferation of user generated content (UGC) in newsrooms. But what is next?

What steps can newsrooms take to go from training staff on how to verify content to using UGC to really find the stories and voices that aren't being covered? How can journalists and sites prevent errors? Who owns the data uncovered by UGC and how is it being preserved?

Join the Online News Association's New York group at the NYC Bureau of the Associated Press on Tuesday, February 18th for a conversation with five experts in different areas of UGC and crowdsourcing to tackle these questions and others. We hope you will join us!

Panelists:

Eric Carvin, Social Media Editor, AP -- @EricCarvin

Mark Little, Founder/CEO, Storyful -- @marklittlenews

Erik Martin, General Manager, reddit -- @hueypriest

Katie Rogers, Social News Editor, Guardian US -- @katierogers‎

Julie Whitaker, Social Media Editor, WNYC -- @julesdwit‎

Moderator: Elana Zak, Social Media Producer, WSJ -- @elanazak

Doors will open at 6:15 p.m.; the discussion will begin at 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments, including wine, beer, and beverages will be served.

Pre-registration by noon on Tuesday Feb. 18 and photo ID required for admission. There is no at-door registration for this event.  Everyone attending should expect to undergo magnetometer screening.  Only essential items should be carried when entering the AP premises.

Interesting discussion. The security at AP was a bit overdone.

I posted a series of sarcastic tweets about this when I received the e-mail last week giving attendees a heads-up. I don't begrudge the staff for doing their jobs, but the move was overkill.

Is there someone I can get in touch with at AP about a lost and found item?

    Hi Elana,

I wanted to cover this event for the Columbia Journalism Review. Is there a way to get a press pass? Let me know!

    Thanks,

    Joanna Plucinska

      Hi Joanna,

Unfortunately, we already submitted our final list to AP's security and can't get anyone else in.

Since this panel is all about UGC and crowdsourcing, tell me: What questions would you like me to ask our panel? Submit them here or on Twitter with #ONANYC and I'll ask a few.

I'd love to see a conversation about the breaking news photo-chasers. Everytime you see a notable photo shared on Instagram, or Twitter, from the scene of a breaking news event (say, a shooting), the comments and @-replies seem to all be network producers asking for permission to run "on all platforms—web, tv, etc." I like that they ask, but feel for the witnesses who may still be very much in shock (or in danger) and getting deluged with these requests coming from half a world away. What's the right way to ask for permission to run these photos?

Great question, Brian! Thanks for asking it.
