NOTE: The entrance to our meeting place, Tech Liminal, is on Clay Street at 11th Street in Oakland. Look for the Tech Liminal sign next to Penelope Bar's outdoor seating

We've had a couple of great events this year. Let's build on the momentum with some even better ones in 2014. Possibilities are infinite: panel discussions with industry leaders, workshops on practical skills, pure networking and social gatherings... This is your opportunity to make the group serve you. We gather at the very hip Tech Liminal offices and brainstorm over pizza or maybe takeout Vietnamese food. Thank Susan Mernit for arranging the space! (We'll all have to chip in for food.)

We had a great meeting that culminated in volunteers coming forward to organize gatherings for January, February and March.

    Hey Laird,

A conflict with a commitment I had made to attend a function at my daughter's school cause me to change from a yes to a no on this event. I would like to attend future planning events if there are any.

I ask that you consider among the candidate topics for MeetUps the following:

    1. The impact of wearable technology on online news from both the perspective of gathering (Google Glass, e.g.) and delivery (e.g, Smartwatches)

    2. Is the concept of news for social good-- political democratization-- viable and not just a not-for-profit venture?

    3. How may technology be used to protect the independence of online news.

In any event, thanks for shepherding this process.

Carlos, can you think of an event we could organize around these ideas? Are there people you would want to hear in a panel discussion, for example?

Hi Laird, surely. I will not be able to do so before the meeting tonight, but I can certain offer some suggestions over the course of the week upcoming.

Sorry to miss this. I had already committed to an event down at Stanford. I like Carlos' No. 2 question but I'd frame it differently. If news is assumed to serve the public good and spur democratic debate, are there expectations the public should have for all news ventures?

Great! Thanks for the enthusiasm. I think the next step would be to narrow down a meeting place and time. Are most of us closer to San Francisco, Oakland/Berkeley or the South Bay? How about next month

Anywhere is fine by me as well. I am in Oakland, so SF and East Bay are closer, but I'm game to travel further if that is more convenient for most people...

I'll brainstorm some ideas! I was really pleased with this meetup's topics and presenters. Thanks for all the leadership and work that went into organization.
