ONA & SPJ Meetup - Media startups with Seattle's GeekWire and Xconomy

Details

Media startups are defining new paths in journalism by tackling new business models, experimenting with content, and generally just making their own rules. Much of this experimentation has taken place at sites like Techcrunch (http://techcrunch.com/), GigaOm (http://gigaom.com/) and others covering the technology industry, and they’re learning lessons that can apply to the rest of the media world.

For this month's meetup, Tuesday, January 31 at 7 p.m., we welcome representatives from a pair of Seattle-based tech news startups: GeekWire (http://www.geekwire.com/) chief business officer Rebecca Lovell and Xconomy (http://www.xconomy.com/seattle/) senior editor Curt Woodward (http://www.xconomy.com/author/cwoodward/). They’ll join product and brand strategy consultant Frank Catalan (http://www.geekwire.com/author/frank)o, also a GeekWire guest columnist, to talk about emerging business models, technology and media, and the opportunities, challenges and development of startups.

Rebecca Lovell (http://www.geekwire.com/author/rebeccalovell) is chief business officer at GeekWire (http://www.geekwire.com/), a technology news site rooted in Seattle’s technology community. She previously was executive director of the Northwest Entrepreneur Network. Lovell also teaches a class on venture capital in the UW’s MBA program, and serves as a mentor at TechStars and a community advisor to Startup Weekend.

Curt Woodward (http://www.xconomy.com/author/cwoodward/) is senior editor at Xconomy Seattle (http://www.xconomy.com/seattle/), covering entrepreneurs, investors, and technology innovations at companies big and small. He was previously a reporter for the Associated Press, covering business, government and politics, and general news in Washington state, Montana, and North Dakota.

Frank Catalano (http://www.geekwire.com/author/frank) is a GeekWire (http://www.geekwire.com/) columnist, and was a radio, TV and print journalist before he took up his consulting business, Intrinsic Strategy. (http://intrinsicstrategy.com/)

This is our sixth in a series of #Newsnext meetups, where we're talking to interesting locals working in the digital space. We bring together writers, editors, photographers, producers, developers, designers, engineers and anyone else with an interest in the production of news. We’ll meet at Jillian’s on Westlake, which offers a cash bar and some great space for discussion and networking.

Cheers,

Tiffany, Monica, Mark and Paul
