O.P.E.R.A. Seattle is "Outstanding People Enjoying Recitatives and Arias in and around Seattle" ... and we welcome anyone interested in hearing and seeing opera! We are young and not-so-young, newbies and long-time aficionados, audience members and performers ... but we all love opera! Even if you're just "opera CURIOUS," you're invited to join us. This is a great group of people to learn from no matter how much or little you already know!
We started out meeting up for the Metropolitan Opera HD Simulcasts - live broadcasts of Saturday afternoon matinees at the Met in NYC (often followed by lunch to talk about what we've seen and just "meet up"). Mid-season last year, we expanded to TWO locations: we usually have meet-ups at both Pacific Place AMC in downtown Seattle and also the Kent Station AMC. We added potluck/movie nights, sometimes to prepare for an upcoming simulcast, sometimes to just see a great DVD of an opera. Many people have suggested that we also schedule opportunities to see live local events and also to use our group site as a way for opera-lovers to connect. Hence, the new name!
The "Live in HD" series begins in October - I'll be posting specifics for those meet-ups soon. In the meantime, here's a quick overview.
Together with the Met’s plans for the 2009–10 season’s new productions and revivals, General Manager Peter Gelb and Music Director James Levine recently announced the lineup for next season’s Live in HD performances. The series, which just won a Peabody Award, will present nine live transmissions in its fourth season. Tickets for the 2009–10 series will go on sale in September, with priority access for Met members (before tickets are made available to the general public). The schedule is as follows:
Tosca – October 10, 2009
Aida – October 24, 2009
Turandot – November 7, 2009
Les Contes d’Hoffmann – December 19, 2009
Der Rosenkavalier – January 9, 2010
Carmen – January 16, 2010
Simon Boccanegra – February 6, 2010|
Hamlet – March 27, 2010
Armida – May 1, 2010
One of our members suggested I post this. I won't be able to attend, so I'm listing it as "unhosted" - although, if anyone wants to step up and be a host for this, let me know!
Here's the info that I got in an email message:
