Brighton residents (and those interested in nearby areas) are invited to attend this free event, giving you the opportunity to ask parliamentary candidates in Brighton Pavilion what they think about Civil Liberties and Human Rights.
Not sure if you live in Brighton Pavilion? Find out here: https://yournextmp.com ;
All of the candidates have been invited and those definitely attending are: Caroline Lucas (Green), Purna Sen (Labour), Clarence Mitchell (Conservative), Chris Bowers (Liberal Democrat), Nigel Carter (UKIP), Howard Pilott (The Socialist Party of Great Britain) and Nick Yeomans (Independent).
There will be prepared questions on the Human Rights Act, Freedom of Speech and Surveillance. The rest will be from the audience on the night.
We will have volunteers passing microphones to audience members to ask their questions!
There will then be 40 minutes of pre-prepared questions and 40 minutes of questions from the audience.
This event is free and open to the public. Please arrive at the Friends Meeting House from 7pm for refreshments in the cafe and a 7.30pm start in the main meeting hall.
Any questions or to RSVP without using MeetUp, please email: [masked]
See you there! :)

I enjoyed the hustings.
On mass surveillance, I wonder if anyone can comment about its effectiveness. It seems a bit like mass screening in the health sector (e.g. for breast cancer).
With health screening, false positives create unnecessary anxiety and may even lead to spurious treatments. The screening may miss some cases (false negatives). I'd imagine the issues arise with mass surveillance.
Given that the number of bad guys is very small, false positives may be numerous with mass surveillance and it may miss some of the real bad guys.
We don't seem to be able to evaluate how well it works and that itself is a big cause for concern.
I oppose mass surveillance for different reasons, but if it is bad value for money that’s yet another thing against it.

Hi everyone,
Great that so many of us will be there, just two final reminders about tonight's event:
1) We're expecting 60+ people to be there (lots of RSVPs on other events on various websites) so arrive from 7pm onwards and 7.30pm at the latest to get a good seat.
2) Tonight is about discussing not arguing so please keep your questions friendly! The candidates have given up their Wednesday evening to come speak to us so be respectful when addressing them even if you don't agree with what they or their party stands for. I'm sure everyone will be but have to say that just in case!
See you tonight,
Lydia

Hi everyone!
Great to see so many people attending even though it's only been a few days since we created the event.
Please submit any questions you would like to be asked on the subject of digital rights and more broadly Civil Liberties to me at: [masked]. I can't guarantee that they'll be asked in the prepared section of the debate but I'll see how many the spaces we have. The more on topic and clear and concise they are, the higher chance it'll be asked!
See you soon!
