The Day We Fight Back—Cryptoparty

We have launched our Don't Spy on Us campaign to stop mass surveillance, along with a coalition of civil liberties organisations: ARTICLE19, Big Brother Watch, English PEN, Liberty, Open Rights Group, Privacy International.

You can take part in the campaign right now!

https://www.dontspyonus.org.uk

As part of the Day We Fight Back we're running a Crypto Party at the Free Word centre to show you how to improve your online security and privacy.

There'll be short talks, opportunities to take action, learn about encryption, secure your communications and ask questions to the experts on GCHQ practices.

At the same time international actions against mass surveillance will be taking place, as the web stands up for the right to privacy.

The evening is hosted by English PEN.

If I brought my laptop along would anyone be able to show me how to make it secure? Not asking for anyone to hold my hand, just point me in the right direction.

    2 · February 7, 2014

    • Alex P.

We can look into this if there is enough demand on the day. It's important to think in advance though what "make my laptop secure" means to you. Which threats are you facing? What data is on there? What do you use the laptop for? Etc...

Ok so the event was a bit short - sorry we didn't have time to look into people's computers. Next opportunity in London is only next week: londoncryptoclass.eventbrite.co.uk

      February 13, 2014

  • John C.

Can't make it. Please can we have some slides after the event? People need to know how to use strong crypto to ensure their right to privacy.

If anyone wants a session focused on the technology behind cryptography, there will be a class on at the London Hackspace 20th Feb and also subsequent classes TBD. Those with zero knowledge welcome. We aim to de-jargonise.

    2 · February 13, 2014

  • Simon V.

It was very good, nice variety of topics and people. Be good to see more similar events where these key issues are discussed and technical hints passed around. I would be happy to advise on Linux issues and help people use it.

Sorry, I couldn't make it after all. Interested to see feedback from those who did... Was the comment about the venue being too small true?

    February 12, 2014

    • Gia R.

I thought it was too small and the event was too short as well. It would be great to have a follow up event for all the topics we didn't get to talk about.

      February 12, 2014

  • Liam C.

Excellent meeting, I really enjoyed myself, and hope to see everyone again soon.

    February 12, 2014

  • richard m.

Good variety of topics to attend

    February 12, 2014

  • Wayne M.

Gutted that I too can't make it after all :( With you in spirit.

    February 11, 2014

  • Dominic M.

Well it looks like I won't be able to make it either. My train has been severely delayed and I'm gutted. I'll be wearing the V for Vendetta Mask for the journey into darkest Essex when I eventually reach London. What time are you all finishing? If the train makes up time I'll swing by but if not I'll see you all at future meets. Warmest Regards. Dominic :-)

Sorry had to switch my RSVP to no at last minute. Have already written to my MP in support of 'Don't Spy on Us' campaign though.

  • Shonali R.

Really sorry but I can no longer make it. Can you keep me posted about the talks and the campaign?
    Thanks, Shonali

I'm looking for people to volunteer to help work on a cyber and physical security open source project which manages security for human rights defenders. If you have Android, crypto, UI/UX or graphic design skills and can help then please mail me at [masked] or lets arramge to chat at the event.

    February 11, 2014

    • Andrew S.

Hi Rory, depending on the level of commitment required, I may be able to volunteer my design expertise. Feel free to message me.

    February 11, 2014

Unfortunately somethings come up that I can't avoid, I will however try to make it later on.

    February 10, 2014

  • Viktor T.

Unfortunately, I cannot make it in the end. Hopefully next time. Keep fighting back :)

Happy to help out with consumer-level encryption stuff on Linux/Ubuntu and Android - eg encrypting your files in a way that can be used with Dropbox etc, IM chats, emails and how to use Tails for (mostly) anonymous use of the interwebs.

    2 · February 10, 2014

    • Jim K.

      Thanks, that's great :)

      February 10, 2014

Will be coming, Is there anywhere I could securely leave a suitcase. I will be travelling from West Somerset to My Partners' in Essex. Whilst I can go and drop my suitcase off at her house and get the train back into London, this seems a very pointless exercise. Am happy for the bag to be checked for obvious reasons. Just want to save the extra 3 hours journey and expense. See you there. Dominic :-)

    February 10, 2014

    • Jim K.

I'm sure it can be put somewhere at the event for the duration

I'd love to come, but I'm helping to run a CryptoParty at Southampton University. Any Soton folk are welcome :)

    1 · February 7, 2014

  • Val S.

I'd love to come but can't. Any chance of a re-run?

    February 10, 2014

    • Jim K.

I'm sure we will do more :)

      1 · February 10, 2014

  • Dylan M.

I'd love to come, but would there be any opportunities to help out, maybe in terms of tech and gadgets running smoothly? Or pretty much anything else.

    February 7, 2014

    • Jim K.

Absolutely. The main thing is helping people with installs and advice

      February 7, 2014

    • Dylan M.

Well I'm no security pro, but sure, I'd be happy to help with anything technical. Let me know if you need anything in particular.

      February 7, 2014

  • Cedric K.

Alas, I shall be away. Any actions to MPs to promote?

    January 31, 2014

    • Jim K.

There will be action on the day :)

      February 6, 2014

  • Nic D.

Already committed unfortunately, would have attended otherwise.

    February 5, 2014

  • Tim

Isn't there a tube strike planned for Feb 11&12? Could cut down attendance quite a bit.

    January 31, 2014

    • Jim K.

We saw that! We'll see how that develops, they often get cancelled, like many things on the tube.

      January 31, 2014

  • terence f.

looks interesting but sadly I am already committed
