General Election Training: How can you campaign against mass surveillance?

Details

ORG supporters are invited to our General Election Training run by ORG staff on how we can make an impact this election! We'll give you all the knowledge you need to be confident and effective digital rights activist this election.

It's impossible to miss that the General Election is only weeks away, MPs have now become candidates again and come May 7th we'll have a new parliament and government.

But it's not over yet, the election campaign is just getting started and we want to help you have your say in the results!

Open Rights Group (https://www.openrightsgroup.org/) will be running a General Election Training session where the core London team (https://www.openrightsgroup.org/people/staff) that run ORG's campaigns share their knowledge and expertise that will help you make the most of the election.

Reserving Your Place:

This event is free to attend but reserve your place by RSVPing yes to this MeetUp event. Numbers are limited and this will be a popular event, so please be considerate to others and if you realise you can't make it update on the event.

This is our plan for the evening:

7.00- 7.15pm: Arrivals and Refreshments

7.15 - 7.30pm: Introductions to surveillance and ORG

  1. Surveillance, the General Election and the next government - Executive Director, Jim Killock

  2. Introduction to ORG's Election Campaign - Campaigns, Ed Paton-Williams

  3. Why Local Activism Matters - Local Groups Co-ordinator, Lydia Snodin

7.30 - 8.00pm: Talking about surveillance

We work on explaining surveillance to other people, whether they be family members or the Prime Minister, who aren't familiar with topics like encryption or government surveillance.

8.00 - 8.30pm: Campaign Action - Letter Writing Workshop

Take action that evening and challenge your candidates in your local paper to say what they think about surveillance. We'll provide a template that you can edit, the emails to contact and send off that evening!

8.30 - 9.00pm: Talking To Your Candidates

We explain how to feel confident talking to your local parliamentary candidate, whether it's on your own doorstep or at a public debate in the town hall.

You don't have to be a supporter to attend, just interested in stopping surveillance.

See you there!

Lydia
