What is a locavore? Well, it is someone who consumes locally. Why consume locally? Apart from the excessive distance chain store bought products and foods travel (and the burning of huge amounts of fossil fuels to get it there) consuming these products push small businesses out of the market with a huge majority of profits (45%) ending up overseas. So, if we are going to build a self-sustainable life then we have to help build a self-sustainable community. There are many ways to consume locally and in the most simple way is looking at where the products you are buying come from, and choosing the products that come from close to where you live, from a store that is privately owned by a local.
In light of this, growing local food is yet another step in the right direction towards creating a self-sustainable life, community and country. Therefore let's really get into the spirit of things and help out at a community garden!
This meetup was inspired by the above awareness and is a way for people who are growing or want to grow their own food or make their own products. It is also for those who want to be involved in community connectedness and support the sharing of knowledge, resources and/or labour.
We are working for a more localised economy and stronger sense of community. The community garden working bee is about people from all walks of life getting together to learn and share new skills and new information. Learning via practical experience is paramount to this meetup group and we invite everyone to come along to learn and/or share.
We will be accepting donations to support the renewal of the subscription for this meetup group - and just for the record you are in no way obligated to give a donation.
