“It is a mistake to think that an intellectual movement requires some special duty or self-sacrificial effort on your part. It requires something much more difficult: a profound conviction that ideas are important to you and to your own life.” —Ayn Rand

Welcome to the first edition of The Objective Life, the newsletter for the North Texas Objectivist Society. The purpose of this newsletter is to better connect our community through announcements and news of our society and its members.

Organizational Update

Jeff Meek Appointed as a New Assistant Organizer

Our group has grown with leaps and bounds the past few years, and has hosted numerous events. The current NTOS Organizer and Assistant Organizers have worked hard to plan and schedule events, as well as provide a steady direction for the group. In order to ensure that NTOS continues to grow in the right direction without missing a beat, Jeff Meek has been asked to join the organizational team, and he has graciously agreed to assist as a new Assistant Organizer.

In addition to a solid foundation in Objectivism, Jeff has several years experience in other areas that will benefit the organization. His experience includes management in the financial industry, writer and entrepreneur, as well as past speaking for NTOS.

Sense of Life Member Profile: John Davis

John Davis has embarked on a cycling adventure through Africa. He will travel with a cycle touring group through ten countries, from Cairo, Egypt to Cape Town in South Africa. The planned route will take him through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Much of the trip will be on paved roads – but he and his group will also cover many miles on rugged, unpaved roads as well. This is a 5.5 month trip, covering approximately 7300 miles.

In addition to riding, he will also have the opportunity to go on a six-day safari in the Serengeti, as well as poling in a dugout canoe in Botswana, and climbing sand dunes in Nambia.

Follow John’s progress online: http://www.crazyguyon... He has promised to try to give us updates when he has access the internet.

Regarding his trip, John noted a very appropriate quote by Mark Twain:
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Most that have had an opportunity to get to know John should not be surprised by his latest adventure. John has already traveled around the world several times, and is an avid cyclist. It is difficult to know John and not be inspired by his courageous sense of life. This trip is just one manifestation of his love for life, and personal commitment to live life to its fullest.

Member Personal Announcements

Engagement of Santiago Venezuela and Kelly McNulty
Santiago was a regular attendee of NTOS, until his recent move to Colorado to be closer to his girlfriend Kelly. Santiago and Kelly are recently engaged, and will be traveling to Texas this month. NTOS is hosting an engagement party on January 17th, 2009. Please join us in congratulating them, and celebrating their engagement.

Engagement of David Veskler and Sarah Allen
David proposed to Sarah at the December 31st, 2008 NTOS New Year Eve’s Dinner. David and Sarah met through the Examined Life Philosophy Meetup.com group that David created. Fortunately for NTOS, he introduced Sarah to the NTOS family, and it has been very satisfying to get to know them both as individuals, as well as watching them grow as a couple. David is a graduate of Texas A&M (class of 2003), and currently working as a Senior Application Developer with Match.com in Dallas. Sarah is currently a full time college student majoring in chemistry at UT Dallas, and has worked as a Montessori Teacher at the Windsong Montessori School in Dallas, TX.

Tom and Pam Expecting First Child
Tom and Pam announced at a recent fall event at the Ranch that they are expecting their first child in February, 2009. We are excited that soon NTOS will have its littlest Objectivist in training.

Seamus Drew Enlists in the Army
Sherry and Travis Karr’s son Seamus has joined the army. Seamus will be cutting the metaphorical umbilical cord and reporting for Basic Training at Fort Knox, Ky this July, 2009. He also completed his high school studies in mid December 2008, and will be starting Collin County Community College at the end of January, 2009.

Josh Zerin Seeking People to Make a Field Trip to New Zealand
As many have read on the Meetup discussion board, Josh is interested in exploring New Zealand to determine whether it could be a safer society to live in, in case the US moves towards economic chaos. He is seeking other members that would be interested in visiting the country in 2009. If interested, please read the thread on our message-board forum and post your interest or email Josh directly through the Meetup website.

(Please note: although run by a current NTOS member, each group is independently run by the member, not NTOS. Please remember that the responsibility for organization and content is solely the responsibility of the person and not NTOS. Please contact the organizer of each group directly with any questions regarding his group or website.)

Ayn Rand was born on February 2, 1905.

Reminder Regarding Member Contact Information
Meetup.com is a great tool for managing events, and for the NTOS discussion board.
However, it is requested that each member please provide or update his name, email address and current mailing address to Todd (aka “Old Toad”), our Organizer. While not required, this assists us in contacting members outside Meetup.com when necessary. Since Todd & Julia open their home to those interested in the group, they have a personal stake in knowing the real names of each person attending. All contact information will remain confidential.
