THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, regardless of its philosophical errors, was a shining achievement in civilization: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. ...”
THE CONSTITUTION, including the Bill of Rights, was another shining achievement in the process of setting man free from men.
THE POLITICS of setting man free from men is the recognition of individual rights, not any kind of despotism, not even if by a tyranny of the majority.
AYN RAND finally provided the proper philosophical foundation for individual rights. But her works are new to the world.
WITHOUT PROPER FOUNDATION, the idea of civilization has been challenged by philosophies of mysticism and the morality of altruism. The result is a slide back toward the politics of tribalism.
ONE WAY YOU CAN HELP DEFEND CIVILIZATION is by discussing ideas with others who are interested in Ayn Rand's philosophy. We can do this in NTOS at “the Ranch” this Saturday, July 3rd, 2010!
