There are at least two examples that require direct valuation of human value. 1) organ transplantation priority selection, wherein a persons contribution to society is part of what some hospital ethics boards consider in their life and death decision making process, and 2) criminal prosecutions, where the remaining life expectancy of the murder victim is taken into account as they assess how dangerous a criminal is to society.

Ok folks, chew on that for a while.

Sorry for such a late addition but this short story by Ursula K. Leguin, "Those Who Walk Away From Omelas" won a Hugo in the 70's for best short story and I think it relates to the theme tonight: http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/faculty/dunnweb/rprnts.omelas.pdf

Something to think about: if you had to choose between the life of your faithful dog and a human stranger, what would your choice be? What if your dog was in the wrong? What if the human was known to you, but not close? Were any of your decisions based one is "special" stays as a fellow human?

Americans spend more on their pets each year than we give to homeless shelters and soup kitchens. Why? [And I am in that number!]

People are not always equal but they should be treated as such because who is to be the judge?

I'll do it for a reasonable price.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
