Presentation Abstract:

In my role as the HP Helion OpenStack U.S. Solutions Architect, I have had an opportunity to design, implement and test a substantial number of traditionally on-premesis hosted applications and deploy them into the HP Helion Public Cloud as a Proof-of-Concept for large corporations. Applications such as Gerrit, Jenkins and Zuul, that were not originally developed and written to be hosted on OpenStack IaaS or in a Public Cloud setting, can effectively be deployed there. The “Big Gray Box” that developers refer to includes a very wide variety of application services that span every area of IT and business need.

This session provides examples of the variety of applications that have been successfully deployed and tested within the HP Helion OpenStack-based Public Cloud. It also provides the “Lessons Learned” and “Best Practices” for a successful implementation related to each. The lecture will also provide a list of the traditional applications that do not fare well in a Public Cloud setting. Finally, the lecture will provide an example of a specific application suite written with Cloud in mind that was successfully deployed for Production, transitioned into a Hybrid model, and finally transitioned again into an on-premises implementation with Disaster Recovery capabilities remaining within the HP Helion Public Cloud.

Speaker Bio:

Bruce Basil Mathews has been a senior level Enterprise Architect for thirty five years in the computer industry specializing in the pre-acquisition definition of, and the business justification for, a wide variety of infrastructures, including Cloud-based solutions founded on OpenStack technologies, in support of customer specific application objectives. Customer engagements have typically included technical design, build, implementation, customization, integration and ongoing administration of multi-vendor servers, storage, SAN and network elements, hosted on-premises, implemented as a managed service, and/or publicly hosted in the cloud. Successful implementations have generally included multi-vendor Operating Systems (Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Irix, RedHat, Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Windows and Mac,) multi-vendor databases (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, DB2, Sybase, Informix, PostGres, GreenPlum, Vertica, Cache, etc.) and NoSQL offerings such as CouchBase, CouchDB, Cassandra, MongoDB, etc. Applications implemented and supported have included a wide variety of multi-vendor commercial and non-commercial applications such as Microsoft ERP, Data Warehousing and Business Analytics, SAP, Oracle Manufacturing and Financials, PeopleSoft, etc. and Big Data solutions such as Cloudera, MapR, HortonWorks, and the eco-system that supports them based on Six Sigma methodologies.
