OpenStreetMap (OSM) is an open-source, online map of the World! (Think Wikipedia... but as a map!) This group is targeted at bringing Portland's residents into a global community of mappers (70,000 and growing!) dedicated to a free map(no cost) that is also "Free" (no restrictions on map data.)
OpenStreetMap is about making sure your community is mapped the way you want it mapped. Whether you like day hikes, bike rides or hanging with your laptop, you can easily edit the OSM map. In edit mode, the background changes to aerial photos so you can make corrections and add features you're familiar with. For outdoor adventurers, there's a Java editor that lets you load any of your GPS traces into a section of the map data. Then, you just draw it in like connect-the-dots, label it and upload it to the site.
Every Wednesday night, you can:
learn more about OSM
troubleshoot with other mappers
Do some 'Armchair Mapping" while having a beer
begin a discussion of the features that need to be added to the map
Sign up for any (or all) of the Wednesday Armchair Mapping Sessions and be on the lookout for Mapping Party Announcements when the weather improves.
Cheers
Calling all OpenStreetMappers and newbies alike--the mapping revolution is now free and Free in Portland! Mapping is easy. You don't need a GPS and a love of the outdoors to map; you can sit at your laptop and become an "Armchair Mapper. Read more
