About us

As Orange County's premier UX community, OCUX brings together designers, researchers, and digital product professionals in one dynamic group. Founded in 2011, we’ve grown into the region’s largest user experience organization, welcoming members from throughout OC and neighboring areas.

We’re proud to be part of UX Speakeasy — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — uniting over 7,500 designers across Southern California. Together, we form the largest design community in the region, powered by volunteers and dedicated to advancing the craft of digital product design.

Our mission is to advance the field of user experience through knowledge-sharing, professional development, and meaningful connections. Each month, we host engaging events featuring renowned industry experts from leading tech companies, interactive workshops, and valuable networking opportunities.

Whether you’re a seasoned UX professional, transitioning into the field, or simply passionate about human-centered design, OCUX provides a supportive environment to:

  • Learn from top design and research leaders
  • Connect with a vibrant network of local professionals
  • Share best practices in UX strategy, research, and design
  • Explore career opportunities in OC’s thriving tech scene

Can You Spot the UX Problem? A Heuristics Challenge

Have you ever used a website or app and thought, "Why is this so frustrating?"
Chances are, it violates one (or more) of Norman Nielsen's famous 10 Usability Heuristics.

Although these principles were introduced more than 30 years ago, they remain one of the most effective tools for evaluating websites, mobile apps, enterprise software, and even today's AI-powered experiences. In fact, many of the usability problems we encounter every day can still be explained by these timeless guidelines.

But this won't be a lecture. This meetup is designed as an interactive challenge where you'll put your UX instincts to the test.

After a quick introduction to each heuristic, we'll examine real-world examples from popular websites and applications. Your challenge is to identify which usability heuristic has been violated before we reveal the answer and discuss why it matters.

    Along the way we'll explore:

    • The 10 Usability Heuristics and why they're still relevant
    • Real examples from modern websites, apps, and software
    • Common design mistakes that even major companies still make
    • Situations where multiple heuristics may be violated at once
    • Tips for using heuristics to improve your own designs and portfolios

Whether you're new to UX or have years of experience, you'll leave with a sharper eye for usability—and you'll probably never browse a website or use an app the same way again.

Bring your curiosity, your opinions, and maybe your favorite (or least favorite) app. There are no wrong answers—only great discussions.

Let me know if you have any questions. Best to PM me on Meetup and/or find me on LinkedIn. Spread the word. Hope to see you there.
