OUR MISSION Explore new possibilities in forestry, energy efficiency and sustainability for Canadian cities by creating an environment to meaningfully engage and collaborate with entrepreneurs, designers, developers, thought leaders and industry experts – through the use of intense, non-technical prototyping workshops.

WHAT IS GREENCITY PROTOHACK We want to help shape a better future for Canadian cities, so we’ve partnered with ProtoHack to run 2 GreenCity Code-Free Hacks – 1 in Vancouver and 1 in Ottawa. These fun hacks will bring people together to work on ideas and even solve challenges around forestry and energy efficiency – all with the goal of making our cities more sustainable. Participants don’t need to have coding experience to participate in the event, anyone with an interest in the topic is welcome. Our events are free thanks to the support of Natural Resources Canada.

Each GreenCity Code-Free Hack is a 12-hour competition designed to inspire and educate the community to take their innovative concepts from ideation to prototyping and pitching. With this event we hope to spark new partnerships and social startups but we will also be using the findings to better understand how government can enable others to drive change. What data needs to be unlocked? In what areas should government co-create? What environment do changemakers need? Answering these questions will help us better understand what’s needed to set the stage for Canada’s sustainable cities and next generation leaders.

PRIZES

Open access to IN·spire, Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Innovation Hub and related policy reps – test your prototype with a federal department* and discuss opportunities, challenges and how to address them. We can also help you to start thinking about applying for funding opportunities*.

Meeting with senior policy leader – we will organize a meeting between you and the most relevant (to your project) senior official in our department to pitch your prototype* and/or discuss new possibilities in forestry, energy efficiency and sustainability for Canadian cities.

Complete idea protection strategy – this includes both patent and non-patent protection (where appropriate; some ideas may only be amenable to non-patent protection), and consultation for idea protection strategy (which includes cost estimates and our detailed report with suggestions). All of these packages include personal consultation with the winner. The total value would be $4000 from KISSPatent.

Tuition for programming to Spring's Kick Incubator – this provides the structure and mentorship needed to get projects to launch along with providing a more substantial point of reference for future hackathon attendees on what they can look forward to accomplishing (worth $1000).
