This month, we'll learn about running Ruby in the browser, and Maglev.

There's still a slot for one more 5-10 minute Lightning Talk. If you're up for giving a talk, please comment below. We'd really appreciate it.

See below for more details.

Time and Place

  • Time: 6:30pm
  • Place: Shopify Lounge. Enter through double-doors in the parking lot. See this map link for door location.
  • Bring: Yourselves

1. Georgiy Shibaev on Full Stack Ruby

Georgiy Shibaev (Github) will be giving a talk titled "Full Stack Ruby," which will be going using over Ruby in your browser (i.e. as you'd run Javascript in the browser).

Here's the abstract:

---- Snip ----

Ruby is great for programming in general. We use it for everything from small scripts to full on webapps and tools. But did you know that you can have Ruby not just on your server, but also in the browser! For this presentation we'll be going over making a web app entirely in Ruby with Sinatra on the server, and Opal (a Ruby-to-Javascript compiler) for client-side scripting.

---- End Snip ----

2. Food Break (Sponsored by Shopify)

We'll take a quick break to get some food in our bellies.

3. Alain Achkar on Ruby In The Browser

Alain Achkar (Homepage | Twitter) will be looking at Ruby in the Browser from a slightly different angle. His talk is titled "A Whirlwind Tour of Ruby in the Browser."

4. Edward Ocampo-Gooding on Maglev

Ottawa Ruby Team Leader, Edward Ocampo-Gooding (Homepage | Twitter), will be giving us a talk on Maglev, which is a 64-bit Ruby implementation that runs on a SmallTalk VM. Maglev enables persistent (ACID compliant), distributed Ruby objects -- any Ruby object, even blocks, procs and lambdas.

It also boasts increased, scalable performance, and the ability to store over a trillion objects. Pretty sweet!

Up for giving a talk?

We're still looking for speakers over the coming months. If you've got an idea for a Full Talk (25-50 minutes) or a Lightning Talk (7-10 minutes) please let the organizers know by filling in this short form.

Looking to figure out whether the 18 y.o. Ruby can get me where I need to be and whether there are other texts other than Kent Beck, Edward Tufte, Dave Thomas which would be worth looking into.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
