Project Night - Open to All Web Developers!

The Project Night that was scheduled for Tuesday, July 9th has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 17th. (Please note that it's on a Wednesday -- not Tuesday, which is when we typically do these.)

Our apologies for any inconveniences caused by the short-notice cancellation this week. We hope ya'll can make it!

More details below... RSVP if you can come.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Come on out to Project Night!

Bring a Ruby/Javascript/Python/PHP or Web Design project to work on, even if it's just an idea, sit around the tables and hack alongside fellow web developers.

Make some progress on your project, get your questions answered, share advice, make connections, collaborate on an app, or volunteer to help out some of the newer developers.

All skill-levels are welcome and encouraged to come!

If you don't have a project, come out any way and we'll try and find something for ya. ;) You may also be able to team up and join an existing project.

This is open to all Web Developers and Web Designers, so invite your friends.

Why?

Because one of the best ways to level up your skillz is to work on a project, and Project Night is a great way to do that!

Not only that, but sometimes it's good to just feed off of the energy of a room full of people doing the same thing as yourself.

Time and Place

  • Date: Tuesday, July 17th, 2013
  • Time: 6:30pm
  • Place: Shopify Lounge. See map link for door location.
  • Bring: Yourselves, your laptop and a project to work on.

Beginners are welcome!

Don't feel shy if you're a beginner. This is a judgement-free zone, and volunteers will be on hand to help out.

On "the project"

Don't have an idea for a project? Try picking your favourite web app, thinking about how you'd improve it, and making a better version of it. Add in your personal flavour. ;)

You can also get some ideas by choosing something you want to learn (e.g. Node.js, HTML5 game development, etc.), and cloning an existing app using that technology.

Or, pick your favourite mobile app, and make a web-based version of it.

Still nothin'? No worries. Join us and see what others are working on. You'll be inspired. :)

Come on out, it'll be fun!

We hope to see you there,

The Ottawa Ruby Team

First time going to Project Night and I was also late, sorry. Was there a round-table introduction and brief description of the projects? I think having a list of running projects posted somewhere would help pull like-minds together. Looking forward to the next event!

Ack! no the RSVP tooltip only shows the event. There goes that idea...

I've noticed this problem too. It is a common issue the ruby group has with other developer project nights. I have a more fun and elaborate idea of how to solve it, which I'm hoping to pitch next Ruby Tuesday.

Michael and Thibaut, Thanks for the help with my brew installed PostgreSQL, RVM installed Ruby problem. In the end I solved it by uninstalling brew PostgreSQL and using Heroku's #Awesome Postgres.app.
It was really inspiring to meet the International HackerU students from the States and South America. I can't believe they are putting their lives on hold to study Rails at Shopify for over a month #Hardcore Ruby Ninjas.

No problem, that was mostly Thibaut. :)

I was plesantly surprised how well the event went with three different developer meetups sharing the lounge.

Anton, I was there for the first time last night as well. I am a beginner and would love to collaborate on a project and learn some great things.

Great to hear this! We should discuss our ideas about language and project then. Perhaps, it's better to do this before the next Project Night.

Unfortunately I couldn't make this, but I was hoping you guys would have recommendations for other similar events to attend?

I'm just getting started with this stuff.

This was my first visit to this meetup and it was great to talk to some experienced developers. In the future, it would be great to collaborate on a project with some beginning developers.

Are you sure the date is correct? I heard the monthly Android meetup was on that day.

I think it'll be okay. There was some talks of the Android group using a meeting room, but honestly I'd rather not have them pushed into a meeting room because of us (I'm pretty sure they reserved the Lounge first; so, really, they're doing us a favour and shouldn't have to move into a meeting room, imho).

Anyway, we'll see what they decide. If they choose to stay in the Lounge, they'll take the front half near the stage, so the speakers won't have to be too loud.

Perhaps considering bringing some headphones though, just in case?

I have been reliving the experience in my mind. It was probably just that Chris and the Cocoa Heads are such a wild and crazy bunch. What do you expect when you get a bunch of programmers together and give them a Objective C API. Wild and Crazy!! :o)

Coming for both Project Night and Android night in parallel, I guess ;)

Thanks for rescheduling guys! Props for organizer diligence.
