What's Web Project Night?

It's a great time to work on your side project!

You'll likely meet some new people, hear what others are working on, and make some progress on your own project.

It's open to anyone working on the web (Web Developers, Web Designers, etc.), so feel free to invite your friends!

And of course, it's totally beginner friendly -- no judgements here, and we're happy to help if you have questions!

What To Bring?

1. A fully-charged laptop (sometimes power outlets are scarce)

2. Something to work on, or an idea to ponder.

3. Yourselves. :-)

(Oh, if you happen to have an spare powerbar handy, that may be helpful. But no worries if not, people are usually okay on the batteries.)

On The Food

We'll be hosting this right above Cafe Nostalgica (http://cafenostalgica.ca/), which has some pretty tasty food you can order. Feel free to pick something up.

Agenda

1. Intros: We'll go around the room and briefly introduce ourselves, and mention what we'll be working on.

2. Work, Code, Chat, or Collab: Some may code, some may chat, and others may collaborate on something together. It's up to you, see where the evening takes you.

3. Demos: We'll open up the floor at the end of the night for some demos.

No side-project?

If you don't have a side-project at the moment, consider starting one. Working on a side-project can be a great way to learn new things, and gives you a place let your creativity flow freely.

Don't have an idea for a project? No worries. Here's one technique to help you come up with an idea:

1. Make a list of your favourite apps (mobile or web-based).

2. Think about how you would change/improve each of them, or what you would do differently.

3. Pick the app from your list that interests/excites you the most. Ideally, try and pick an idea that you feel most passionate about and would like to see through to completion.

4. (Optional but recommended: Plan your project out a bit. Consider at least making some sketches or mockups. This can help drastically with keeping things clean, and will guide to to create what you envisioned for your app.)

5. If you're goal is learning: Pick a technology you'd like to learn or improve in (Ruby, Python, Javascript, React, Ember, Angular, Meteor, etc.).

6. Build it! :)

7. Then, if you're up for it... ship it! :)

So, if you're favourite app is Gmail, try building a version in , with your own twists.

Get funky with it! :)

Yes, you could end up with a clone of the app with this technique, but if your goal is learning, you'll likely learn a lot along the way.

Otherwise, try brainstorming over the next few days when you have some free cycles and see what you come up with.
