Hike at Vasquez Rocks

More details will follow. Meet at the small parking lot--called Geology Trail. Meet by dumpster. Will have Meetup sign. If you don't see use there, look for us by Ranger Station. Ranger will start his hike there. Rain or hot weather cancels hike.

Tons of movies were filmed here including Star Trek ( please don't come dressed as your favorite treckie--this isn't Comic Con). Other movies filmed here are “The Lone Ranger”, “Zorro”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, “Bonanza”, “Blazing Saddles”, “Star Trek”, “24”, “The Six Million Dollar Man”, “MacGyver”, “Austin Powers”, Star Trek 11, Numbers and “The Flintstones”.

This 932-acre park located in the high desert near Agua Dulce Springs and features spectacular rock formations, Tataviam Indian sites, and a seasonal stream. The rocks’ history began in prehistoric times when the sandstone rocks were uplifted at a picturesque angle, showing their jagged red features. In 1874 Tiburcio Vasquez, one of California’s most notorious bandits, used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. His name has since been associated with this geologic feature.

Bring shoes with good traction, 2 quarts of water, hat, sunscreen (may be hot). Optional potluck afterwards at one of the picnic tables there--hopefully one will be available.

Potluck is cancelled due to possiblity of not getting a picnic table and some people not wanting to join for potluck. The good news is that you'll have a choice of 2 places to meet afterwards (perhaps 3) in nearby Santa Clarita:

There is a close Starbucks in a mini-mall in Santa Clarita. If people don't want to do the Starbucks, you can go to other places in the mini-mall to eat. Some of the places to eat are Subway, Sushi, Mexican food, KFC. So meet at Starbuck and then OSS members can break into groups and decide where you want to eat or just stay at Starbucks.
