BLACKWELL'S OXFORD PRESENTS: A Celebration of 60 years of City Lights
Details
City Lights is an independent bookstore-publisher in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1953 by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin, both the store and the publishers became widely known following the obscenity trial of Ferlinghetti for publishing Allen Ginsberg's influential collection Howl and Other Poems (City Lights, 1956).
To celebrate 60 years of 'City Lights' bookstore and publishers, Blackwell's will be hosting a very special evening of readings from selected authors published by City Lights including Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and more! This stupendous evening takes place on what would have been Allen Ginsberg's 89th birthday. A similar celebration will be taking place across the water in Paris, where our comrades in the trade, Berkeley Books, will also be celebrating in their own way. Later in the year, on 7th October will be a second celebration of 60 years to the evening that 'Howl' was performed at Six Gallery for the first time. (Details and programme to follow soon)
