LEADERSHIP FROM THE BOTTOM

As a leader of project teams for over 20 years I have watched colleagues in a diversity of organizations – large and small – generate countless promising ideas that eventually fade into oblivion. Several of these organizations are either no longer in existence or have lost their position among market leaders. Unlike two and three decades ago, organizations in the 21st century employ more and more knowledge workers in increasingly complex tasks, and in many instances, with the best perspective on how to improve the operation of the organization. Rather than approaching organizational change from an executive management perspective, this presentation discusses how fiercely competitive forces require leadership from the bottom of the organization chart; that is, strategies and action plans created by the multitude of individual contributors, project managers, and other non-executives. At a healthcare IT organization, executive management approved a fully-staffed, multi-year project that saved the organization tens of millions of dollars. As my proposal progressed through various stages of management, transferable concepts came to light along the way, including common pitfalls, deliverables, artifacts, and lessons learned. This presentation provides:

A frontline perspective on how individual contributors, project managers, and other non-executives can lead change in a fast-paced, fiercely competitive, 21-century organization Real-life experiences with common pitfalls, deliverables, and artifacts enabling a PM to take action and advance a change project proposal through management approvals to management delight
Based on my PM Network article nominated for the PMI Cleland Literary Award, this presentation provides a frontline perspective with specific steps based on real-life experience describing how individual contributors, project managers, and other non-executives can successfully lead organizational improvements in a fast-paced, fiercely competitive, 21-century organization.
