Upcoming events (4+)
See all- PADDLE THE PIGEON AT HARTFORD, CLASS I-IIHome Depot, Asheville, NC
This is cross posted with another group, please sign up for both here.
This run has always been one of the favorites of many paddlers.
We will paddle from Hartford 13.5 miles on this Class I-II [maybe one II+, you can avoid though] stretch of exciting whitewater/ wave trains, island passageways, plus it has some beautiful rock cliffs. Between the two I-40 bridges there are many exciting ledges scattered about.
This is dam release and flows approx. 4 mph.; so although the mileage is long, it only usually takes approx. 4 hours including lunch. We have seen interesting bird life on this stretch, including the Night Heron. Because it is dam release we have to start later than usual, to get on the river when the water will arrive at the put-in. Please arrive 15 minutes before our leaving time of 10 am, to accommodate carpooling, at Home Depot exit 44 in Candler
You have to be skilled in Class I-II and have ALL of your appropriate gear plus lunch for the day.NO INFLATABLES or SUPs PLEASE. Need spray skirts; plus FLOTATION [air bags] in all, if you don't have a sit-on-top. Please have everything D-clipped (water bottles, etc) to your kayak. Bring lunch and water. A PFD and whistle are required by law. Please have a 7' line on the bow to aid in rescues.

I need 4 paddlers to make it a go; or less if I know you and your skills.

KEEP IN MIND I-40 JUST REOPENED, BE PATIENT IF THE TRAFFIC SLOWS UP A LITTLE THERE, AND JUST BE THANKFUL IT IS OPEN FOR NOW. - Kayak and camp Lake JamesLake James State Park, Nebo , NC
Paddle and camp on Lake James. These are "boat in" sites, we will leave from Lake James park (assuming it is open by then - if not, we have a backup), Kayak to the campsite. We should have an almost full moon-rise at 7:50pm, so we can do a moon paddle. More logistics, food, and shared costs will be worked out once we know how many are coming. We also have a pontoon boat to bring supplies. Note start/end times are flexible. Three sites have been reserved (Long Arm Boat In Camping Area 3 - L25, L26, L27). If there is sufficient demand, we may be able to get additional sites (L23 would be best), so please confirm early. Bring your camping gear, kayak gear, and fishing gear!
