OWS Press release:

OCCUPY WALL STREET 6 MONTH ANNIVERSARY CALL TO ACTION: AMERICAN SPRING – SOWING the SEEDS of CHANGE

Whereas March 17th is the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day in New York City, we would like to recognize the Irish History of Oppression by the British Empire, and connect this oppression historically with oppression of indigenous and tribal people, the impoverished and working class around the world.

Whereas the Great Hunger of 1847 was a direct result of the production and distribution of food and resources that was decided upon by the colonial powers we recognize our solidarity with this history and the necessity to create awareness of the tremendous pain, suffering and displacement that has been put upon the poor and working class around the world by colonial and imperialist powers.

We present this Call to ACTION

LAYING to REST HUNGER and GREED

WELCOMING a NEW SEASON

CELEBRATING

OUR RESILIENCE and DETERMINATION

MARCH 17th & 18th

MARCH 17 - Departing at 1 PM - Procession to THE IRISH HUNGER MEMORIAL

A solemn procession to bury hunger, greed and grief. A joyous re-birth and welcoming of a new season.

March will begin at Liberty Plaza. A ritual burial and re-birth will be conducted upon arrival at the Hunger Memorial. Speakers will address issues of food sustainability, housing, healthcare, and the economy (campaign finance reform/end corporate personhood). Potatoes will be blessed and distributed for planting on the following day- (OWS provides the ‘taters!)

This is an all age free event.

Please dress for windy conditions as the event is held directly on the waterfront.

MARCH 18 - PLANTING SEEDS OF CHANGE

In all boroughs – all day - community gardens, community centers, churches, foreclosed homes – This event is about promoting human rights – so we extend a special invitation to our homeless friends, our friends in the LGBTQ community – as well as those organizations advocating for women’s health care and reproductive rights. We invite you and your congregation to join us in the procession – to receive your potatoes to bring back to your communities for planting.

Bring your banners! Show your colors! In the spirit of peace, love and unity and with a commitment to non-violence.

All are welcome! JOIN US!
