Workshop: RED Camera: The Red Workflow - Shoot, Edit, Raw [3 hours]

Details

Ambarish Manepalli and Sam Gordon [or the other way around] have started a new company called Red Paint Films. They've just purchased a new Red Scarlet camera, and have volunteered to present a three hour workshop on the camera, and its' related workflow. This is limited to 30 people, so if you RSVP, show up!, or cancel the day before so the automated system can offer your space to someone else. This is also being posted on reduser.com, so there will be competition for spaces.

Anyway, I will record and quick-edit this [3 hours? oh well], and post it to the blog.

If you don't know about the Red, it is a really fast image capture computer, or should we say camera. It has a huge sensor, captures 4k [cinema-sized, so to speak] images at 30 fps, and 5k stills in 12 fps bursts. That is to say, it is a hybrid cinema/photo camera... The key point to the system is that it captures all images in RAW format. I.e., much more of the raw data coming off the sensor is stored in the image file, giving you the latitude to correct exposure and color afterwards without any image degradation. If that is a foreign language, so is French, yet you live in Paris.

The older [relatively speaking] and much more expensive version of the camera, the Epic, is standard equipment in cinema production.... the famous example at the moment is The Hobbit, which is being shot in 3d on Red systems. On most levels, the camera competes very well with the highest end Arriflex or Sony [or other brand] digital cinema cameras, at 1/8 the price. And, it is small, and light [sort of]. Sam and Rish [or the other way around] say that their pricing structure will be -very- favorable to independents.

I have to say that we are -really- lucky these two are willing to give us a look at and education in this system. This is a big deal, as far as I am concerned. Remember, this is Paris, and the presentation is in English, which is a foreign language.
