March Book Discussion

Details

Books for March are Canada by Richard Ford and Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan.
Canada, Richard Ford: After 15-year-old Dell Parsons' parents rob a bank and are arrested, the trajectory of his life is forever altered. He and his twin sister, Berner, are left to forge their own futures while still reeling from the shock of their parents' desperate act. Berner, burning with resentment, takes off for the West Coast, while a family friend makes arrangements for Dell to hide in Canada. But what Dell discovers in Canada, while in the employ of a mysterious Harvard-educated American with a violent streak, is to take nothing for granted, for every pillar of the belief the world rests on may or may not be about to explode.
Sweet Tooth, Ian McEwan: Set in the 1970s and featuring a young woman who is recruited by MI6. Exploring the worlds of literature and authorship, as well as Cold War espionage, it's a witty story of betrayal and intrigue which will appeal to fans of "Atonement". Serena, a compulsive reader of novels, is sent on a ‘secret mission’ which brings her into the literary world of Tom Haley, a promising young writer. First she loves his stories, then she begins to love the man. Can she maintain the fiction of her undercover life? And who is inventing whom? To answer these questions, Serena must abandon the first rule of espionage – trust no one.
