[POSTPONED] January JavaScript Meetup

** NOTE THE EARLIER TIME! **

We're targeting a 6:30 talks start time to get things rolling earlier in these chilly winter times. So if you haven't come before because it felt late, come now!

Speakers

D3 Data Expression and Null Family Values with Ben Garvey

Learn about D3.js and how to use it to express, and visualize data.  I'll also talk about issues that come up with incomplete data sets and some ways to clean them up.  My talk will conclude with a D3 demo that shows over 200 years of genealogical data gathered by my aunt.

Real World Responsive jQuery with Cat Farman

Developing responsive websites has become a core service for web design agencies, but presents a challenge in delivering nimble, lean websites that are beautiful, usable and functional at every screen size. I'll share real-world jQuery solutions we use in our work at Happy Cog. This talk is suitable for beginners and intermediate front end developers and designers interested in jQuery solutions to common responsive design challenges like navigation patterns, touch friendly sliders, and more.

Both presentations were excellent. The topics were relevant and the speakers knew how to present well. Clone them!

Hi! I'm new to javascript, and was just wondering do these meetups cost money to attend?

    February 12, 2014

    • Pam S.

Our meetups are generally free of charge thanks to the support of our sponsors, if there ever is a charge, it will be clearly displayed on the registration page.

    • Pam S.

Also, feel free to bring your own dinner if you want (we don't provide food), or make plans to dine at Han Dynasty after

(this is a talk meetup, so you don't need a laptop if you don't want to bring one)

+1 for the slightly earlier start, especially for the Quorum meetups where we can't just hang out in the pub beforehand. :)

    2 · January 29, 2014

    • Pam S.

Good to hear. And just a reminder to everyone -- with the earlier time, Quorum is food friendly, so it's ok to bring a sandwich/dinner into the space.

Barcelona is playing Man City that day, I'll be MIA and DOA by 6:30. Another time! :)

I'm new to JavaScript. What can I expect to get out of this meetup?

    December 23, 2013

    • Pam S.

Every other month we host meetups with talks, more of a formal program. The other months, we host lightning talks/project nights that are more conversational/about hanging out. I'll be updating this listing in January with our speakers, but expect responsive design and data visualization to make an appearance.

The final reschedule date is TBD; I updated this event with a date so interested parties can stay updated about this particular meetup agenda.

Updated the event to note postponement; February 18th is a temporary placeholder, final date available as soon as we can (later this week)

Getting excited to talk about Data Expression on Wednesday and how I think it differs from traditional data vizualization. The project I'm demoing turned out fantastic.

Don't think I could make it there by 6:00 from Wyncote after work.

I might try to make it. Would I be disturbing anyone walking in late?

      January 15, 2014

    • Pam S.

The room's pretty friendly to latecomers -- I usually make sure there's some seats at the back for sneaking. We also have a break between talks when you can resettle yourself.

Love to, but downtown Philly at rush hour is a non-starter. Maybe in the western suburbs sometimes?

Yeah, but that makes it an hour in, and an hour out.
Hardly worthwhile for a 1-2 hour meeting. There are SO MANY user group meetings (Linux, Java, Agile, sometimes Python, Android, etc.) that are within 3 miles of my house that it's hard to justify anything more than 30 minutes or so travel time. I already attend at least one user group meeting per week.
