Details

Anne will present on the following question:

To accept only half of the truth as being the whole of the truth: Is this being truly true to the truth?

No one is anyone, one single immortal man is all men. ... I am god, I am hero, I am philosopher, I am demon and I am world, which is a tedious way of saying that I do not exist.

  • Jorge Luis Borges: "The Immortal" (1949)

We will continue our examination of the ideas of Wilfred Cantwell Smith but focus here more on his epistemology.

The main reading material comes from Smith's Modern Culture from a Comparative Perspective, 1997, available at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0791433943) or Google (http://books.google.com.au/books?id=sRAOhlWerDQC). Focus will be on the 20-page chapter 8 titled "Objectivity and the Humane Sciences: A New Proposal". A copy of this chapter is available for private study (http://files.meetup.com/7160362/Smith-ch8-pdf.pdf) by our members only.

Those interested in further commentary on the Biblical scene depicted (of Pilate and Jesus) might look at my handout for the original first topic (http://files.meetup.com/7160362/what-is-truth-colour-booklet.pdf) presented to PhiloSophia in 2011 and again (updated) in 2012.

...

Due to poor rsvp response, I've cancelled the booking for the larger Norman Selfe room ($36 for 2 hrs) and settled for the smaller Windeyer room ($18 for 1hr). This room has the advantage that it can be booked for a one hour slot, while most other rooms require a minimum 2 hour booking. On the other hand, this room is just a small office and will hold 6 people max. So, please keep your rsvp's up-to-date, especially if the numbers reach 6.

We will spend this hour focussing on the reading, with paper and pen for taking notes.

After that, we will move on to the nearby Laksa-Laksa eatery where we can continue the conversation on a more informal basis over hot soup.
