iPhoneography Workshop by Rad A. Drew: Saturday May 4th

  • May 4, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Have you noticed the many stunning photographs being made with the iPhone? Want to learn how you can turn your iPhone into a more creative tool?

The new iPhones do an amazing job of capturing images and have made the creation and processing of images more fun (and more portable) than ever before. Many traditional point and shoot cameras, and even the DSLRs of professionals, are giving way to the iPhone. But, do you know how to take your images to the next level and to effectively use available iPhone apps to create images that no one would guess were taken AND processed with your iPhone?

Shot and processed on an iPhone 4.

We are very lucky to have master iPhoneographer Rad A. Drew, a photographer from Indianapolis, join us in Plymouth for the weekend of May 4th and 5th where he will be teaching a one-day iPhoneography workshop on 2 different days. (Note: The same workshop is being held on two consecutive days and you can sign up for either one-day session. Saturday here on this event. Or please see our Sunday event, your choice).

This is just for iPhone users of all versions, unfortunately we can not cover non-iPhone smart phones.

During the workshops, Rad will not only discuss the best way to capture images using the iPhone, but will also show how to take our iPhone images to the next step and effectively (and creatively!) utilize the new iPhone apps to process the images. This workshop has been updated to reflect new applications and processes introduced in recent months, including the incredible 645 Pro, Google+ Snapseed, and many more. You will even learn to create layered images with textures!

Note: Be sure and check out Rad’s website for more images at: http://totallyradimages.blogspot.com

Agenda

The Possibilities:
We'll explore iPhone images to show what is possible with the iPhone and available apps. You'll see (and soon be creating!) images that will make you question in disbelief, "Are you SURE that was done with an iPhone?!"

The Camera Applications:
We'll examine camera applications that allow you to take a variety of different types of images and improve the quality of your photographs. For example, you'll learn to take High Dynamic Range (HDR) images which capture the range of light and dark that we see with our eyes, leading to greatly improved images from an exposure standpoint.

Applying Filters:
Use applications to enhance your images to achieve your unique vision. We'll explore applications that will allow you to "grunge" and age your images, apply painterly effects, and add vignettes and borders.

Blending and Stitching Images:
The real excitement comes from combining one or more images to create extraordinary effects. You'll learn which apps are best for blending and how to stitch multiple images into fantastic panoramas that incorporate HDR. You'll learn three different methods for creating stunning multiple-shot HDR images. You’ll even learn how to apply textures to your iPhone images!

Moravian Pottery and Tile Works;
Shot with iP4s and processed with assorted apps.

Basic Tips and Tricks
The workshop will be filled with tips and tricks that include the following:
1. What apps and equipment do I need?
2. How do I organize my applications?
3. How do I maximize my iPhone's performance?
4. How can I extend my iPhone's shooting time?
5. How do I ensure the best possible resolution for my images?
6. How do I transfer images from the iPhone to my computer or iPad?

Continued Learning
Because of the rapid evolution of this exciting technology, keeping up can be a challenge. You'll get answers to the following questions:
• Where can I see other iPhoneographer's work?
• Who are some good teachers for advanced learning?
• What sites are best for keeping up with the new apps?
• Who are some of the leading iPhoneographers today?

Prerequisites to get the most out of this workshop:
• Be familiar with your iPhone and its basic functionality.
• Have a willingness to purchase apps.
• Know how to download apps from iTunes.
• Have your current App Store account set up correctly (You know you're going to want to download new apps!)

*Must Have * Must Bring:
Your iPhone (and iPad if you have one.) Older iPhones that have newer operating systems are good, too.  Other smart phones besides iPhones will not work for this workshop.
Be sure your phone is charged and bring your charging cord.

Apple ID and password to your working Apple store account.

Bring a notebook or other means of taking notes.

When: Saturday, May 4 (this same workshop is also offered on Sunday, May 5, see our calendar for Sunday's sign ups.)
Time 9am to 4:30pm with a short break for lunch on your own.

Where: We will be at a beautiful location on the bluffs overlooking Cape Cod Bay in Manomet, Plymouth, MA. There will be a Japanese Tea House to try out our new found iPhone information. The grounds are private, so instructions will be sent a few weeks before to those who are registered.

Note: Two weeks to 10 days before the workshop, we will send out an email to all enrollee’s suggesting apps they should purchase prior to class and a reminder of what to bring.

Rad Drew’s Bio

Photography has been in my life for as long as I can remember. I shot through high school and college, and worked as a photojournalist after earning a BA in Journalism from Indiana University, Bloomington. In 2010, I discovered the iPhone. To say that it’s transformed how I see and think about photography would be an understatement! With the phone, my eye is always on because my camera is always with me. I see differently, and more. I'm more aware of the play of light and shadows on potential subjects, and I see things that I might have missed before. I’m constantly translating, framing, and considering the possibilities of how I might shape an image. I don't stop and shoot all I see, but many times I do, and the results are often wonderful. Since I don’t need to interrupt the creative process by waiting to get to the computer, I often get into a rhythm of shooting and processing that is more confluent than the way I use my Nikon. I’m more integral in the moment and more immersed in the creative process when I do iPhone work. When combined with social media, teaching and learning are easier than they’ve been in the art’s short history. It is a great time to be a photographer!

Terrific! Lots offered and hopefully, after practice, lots learned! A 'plus' was, even as a complete beginner with the iPhone, I feel the material covered, could be understood and integrated. I appreciated the very good communication and event organization and coordination. I registered late and was pleased to receive the necessary materials before attending.
