Join Betty Wiley and Amy Davies for this special one-day photography workshop exploring the beauty of autumn on Cape Cod.
We will be visiting several beautiful marsh and tidal areas and also be photographing at a great location for sand dunes and snow fences.
Where: Mid and lower Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Locations will include Yarmouth Port, Dennis and Brewster.
When: Thursday, September 19 (rain date: Friday, October 20th). We will begin before sunrise and the workshop will conclude in the evening, after the sunset shoot. Note that we will be having dinner after the sunset shoot at a beautiful nearby restaurant overlooking a marsh.
Cost: For this iconic Cape Cod photography tour is $160 per person for the entire day. Includes photographic instruction at our specially chosen locations and classroom time. Meals and transportation are not included.
To register, click 'Yes' under 'will you attend?' and pay using PayPal. Your confirmation is being on the list of attendees with the word 'paid' next to your name.
Description: This workshop will start with a sunrise in Yarmouth Port where participants will photograph a beautiful marsh area with boardwalk. The compositions here are limited only by your imagination as the tidal pools create patterns in the golden hues of the marsh grass. A boardwalk spans the marsh and provides a perfect vantage point for great compositions and reflections. Participants may also have opportunities to photograph various shore birds, such as yellow legs, as they comb the pools looking for food. Ospreys and a resident kingfisher are also possibilities. We will then continue on our morning journey to a beautiful beach nearby where we will capture iconic Cape Cod snow fences and sand dunes. This is a great place for black and white and infrared photography (http://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/what-is-infrared-photography/), see example below, so bring an infrared camera if you have one. After the morning shoot, we will grab breakfast at a charming little café nearby on historic route 6A.

Mid-morning through mid-afternoon will be spent uploading and processing images from the morning shoot. Betty and Amy will assist students in ways to best optimize their images using Photoshop/Photoshop Elements as well as with various plug-ins such as Topaz and/or NIK. Techniques that will be covered will include tips on how to make your images “pop” and ways to create depth and interest. Compositional elements and use of textures will also be discussed. After the processing session, we will head to a nearby restaurant for afternoon high tea/late lunch before we head to our sunset shooting location.

The late afternoon/evening location will be at a very popular spot for photographers because of it’s unique beauty and color. Beautiful golden marsh grasses provide interesting and beautiful compositional elements and the tidal pools reflect the light and clouds. This is truly a stunning location at low tide and we are lucky that we will have low tide coinciding with sunset for this evening shoot. This is a favorite location of Betty's and we can’t wait to share it with you.
Our workshop evening will conclude, appropriately, at a restaurant overlooking a marsh (where else☺).
Who should attend: Beginner to advanced photographers interested in improving their photography, getting to know the middle and lower Cape areas, and capturing wonderful images.
Lodging: This is a one-day workshop and therefore we have not reserved a block of rooms however, if you wish to arrive the night before or extend your stay, we will be happy to provide with a list of places nearby.
Meals: Meals are not included. We will be having breakfast at a charming café nearby followed by a late lunch. We will have dinner at a restaurant overlooking a beautiful marsh.
Maximum Group Size is 14 people
Need To Bring: A camera that has the ability to change basic settings: ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed. You should be familiar with the operation of your camera for this workshop. A 24-105mm lens or similar focal length is recommended. A 70-200 mm (or similar) will also be useful for tighter compositions. In addition, a circular polarizer will be helpful to increase saturation of the beautiful fall colors and to minimize glare.
A sturdy tripod is very helpful.
Attendees who wish to process their images will need laptops or a portable desktop with either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (a version that supports layers and masking, 9 to 11 works best). NIK software is optional and a 15-day trial version can be uploaded for this class. If you do not have a laptop or desktop you can bring, you may share with a friend or take notes.
Requirements recommended for students to get maximum benefit on post processing: While high proficiency is not required for Photoshop or Elements, knowledge of how to navigate the programs, download images from your camera and find them, and move them around your laptop and software programs is required.
Refunds: Refunds only 7 days from the purchase date of your ticket if more than a month before the event. This means you have 7 days after you buy a ticket to change your mind and get a refund, but after that the ticket is yours. No refunds after the 7 days of purchase, unless we need to cancel. One month or sooner before the event the 7 day rule does not apply. You may find someone else to purchase your ticket on your own, if this is the case please let us know. If you find you cannot attend, it is up to you to contact someone on the waiting list, or a friend and make arrangements with them to take your place. Thank you for understanding this is the only way we can run these workshops.
Transportation: Transportation is not included. Carpooling to local destinations is encouraged.
Rain Date: Friday, September 20th. We will decide a few days before this event if we need to change the date and will notify everyone as soon as we can by email, so keep an eye on your email and make sure we have one that you check. If we have to change the original date, you will receive a refund if you can't make the rain date. Our goal is for everyone to have a wonderful experience, so we don't want to go out in bad weather.
You are sure to leave with beautiful images of your own and you will learn processing techniques from Betty and Amy as we all work on our images in the late morning/afternoon. There is simply no better time of year to photograph on Cape Cod. The bugs and the crowds are gone and the weather is cool, but not cold, and the marshes are simply gorgeous as they prepare to go dormant for the winter.
Hope you can join us for this fun-filled, special day!
