This time of year you will probably encounter the challenges posed by photographing in high contrast situations, and may even take images in which the highlights have become too bright or the shadows too dark. A classic example is when your photos of snow come out looking grey.

Mastering the various metering modes on your camera is a way to get more control over contrasting situations and is an important skill for creating images in which the key elements are correctly or creatively exposed.

If you want to learn how to master this essential feature of your camera then come along to this meetup. We will be a fairly small group, just 8 attendees, so you will be sure to get plenty of attention.

Led by professional photographer, Ian Murray, you will spend a few fun and informative hours learning when to rely on Matrix/Evaluative metering and when to switch to spot metering. You will learn the advantages and disadvantages of partial and center weighted metering and get plenty of opportunity to try all these essential features for yourself.

The meetup will run from 10am until 2pm and will cost $40. The meetup is suitable for all levels. You will need a camera that will allow you to select spot metering in addition to the standard evaluative (Canon) , or matrix (Nikon) metering modes. Most digital SLRs have this capability as well as some compact pocket cameras.
