Transit of Venus Watch Party
Hosted by Pinellas County Skeptics
Details
Come join us for, literally, the last time in your life you can view the transit of Venus. This is when Venus passes directly between earth and the sun. During this time the planet is visible as a small dot gliding slowly across the face of the sun. The next transit won't occur until 2117.
St. Petersburg Astronomy Club members will be conducting a public viewing of the Venus transit of the Sun on June 5, 2012 at the Richard A. Beard parking garage on the USF campus, top floor, NW corner. The transit begins at approximately 6:05pm and our view ends at sundown at approximately 8:24pm. Directions to the parking garage can be found by following the link below to see its location. http://usfweb2.usf.edu/parking_services/maps/Visitor_Map.pdf
Enter the campus at the main entrance on Fowler Ave. Make a left at the first traffic light and the garage is located on the right at the next traffic light.
There will also be a public viewing in Maderia Beach, on the deck of the Snack Shack, at the intersection of Maderia Way and Gulf Blvd. There will be video equipment available so all can view the transit in real time. Such transits will not be visible again in our lifetime, as the next transit will occur in December of 2117.
Both locations are being run by astronomers, so we should have a variety of ways to view the transit, plus some great folks to answer any questions. Should be a great way to spend the evening, barring weather issues. Hope you can make it!
