Online News Association Code Academy
Are you interested in making your stories more dynamic, but not sure how to do it? This four hour workshop will explore basic workflows and techniques for using data to tell stories. We will also be using data to generate maps and charts that are dynamic and generated from real civic data provided in partnership with Pittsburgh OpenData, our Code for America brigade. We will also explore ways to take the visualizations created and place them online!
The software we will be using is Tableau Public, the free version of Tableau, one of the most popular data visualization packages in journalism. It works on both PCs and Macs, and is a free download at https://public.tableau.com/s/.
Bring your own laptop. No coding skills are required—basic computer literacy is all that's needed.
We know that you all are busy individuals, so we are offering this workshop on two consecutive days. Note that the content of two days will be identical—no need to come to both! If you want to make it easy on us, let us know which day you'll be attending in the comments after you've RSVP'd. You're welcome to come to both.
Workshop hours:
Friday 9am to 1pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm
Location:
Academic Hall room 308

Presented in partnership with ONA Pittsburgh

Sponsored in part by the Knight-Mozilla OpenNews project

Quick update. The class will be held in Academic Hall, room 308 at Point Park University. Meetup isn't allowing for the event location to get any more specific than it is, but I've updated the description.
July 6
I posted this to the Pittsburgh Tableau User Group on LinkedIn. Thought it might generate some interest over there.

Hi,

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
