Birding Solano County

From the largest marsh system on the West Coast to the heights of the Vaca Mountains, down the rolling prairie hills to flat agricultural fields, Solano County is much more than the Interstate 80 corridor that we take for granted.
On this full day trip, we will explore various habitats that provide foraging sites for both visitant and resident birds. Among the places we may visit are Rush Ranch with vistas of Grizzly Island and Suisun Marsh, the prairie lands of southern Solano, Jepson Prairie, the historic 1871 Tremont Church, a portion of the Putah Creek watershed, and of course, who knows what surprises along the way.
This is also a day featuring winter birds of prey. We will search for falcons, eagles, and the buteos of winter, the rough-legged and ferruginous hawks, as well as the seasonal influx of resident raptors. We will also be looking for owls, which may include barn, burrowing, and great horned.
Winter weather is quite changeable and we will decide on the final route for the day as we monitor the weather before the trip. Dress in layers, bring lunch and drinks, and start the day with a full tank of gas. Though we spend time away from services, we will have rest stops and hope for a day with picnic possibilities. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one.
