Skip to the Spit: A Limantour Beach Adventure

Details

Ocean waves from the northwest hit Point Reyes Beach head on and bend around its tapered southern tip, gradually breaking at an angle on Limantour Beach forming the Limantour Spit. This angled break carries and deposits sand, contributing to the westward growth the spit. Lying at the biologically rich juxtaposition of ocean, marsh and Drakes Estero, the Limantour Spit is utilized by thousands of birds and seals on their daily and seasonal migrations. In this unique and biologically rich ecosystem we will start our adventure.

Once known as Limantour Drive, the trail weaves between the dunes and a defunct subdivision that began development prior to 1962 when the National Seashore was formed. We will simultaneously survey the Limantour Estero on our right and the vast Pacific Ocean on our left from the dune's highest points with views of Drake's Head, Sunset Beach, Drake's Beach and the greater Drake's Estero. With Michael using his wit and knowledge as our guide we will explore one of the most pristine areas of the park.
