Welcome to another edition of Friday Bicycle Commuting! Hope everyone is enjoying summer, now that it has finally arrived. I enjoyed my week off from writing an email last Friday, pure laziness, nothing more, but you gotta do that once in a while!

> OUR NEWEST MEMBERS

Since August 1st (henceforth it will be since the last email), we have welcomed the following new members:

Elizabeth
"I bicycle in the greater Portland area"

Sarah Palmer
"I've been commuting by bicycle for a couple years now and think being part of a network of commuters could be rather informative and educational."

Ingrid Swanson
"Just moved from the other portland and love to ride- excited to commute and meet some folks."

Robert Monteux
(no introduction given)

WELCOME, ELIZABETH, SARAH, INGRID, AND ROBERT!!

> POLLS / ABOUT OUR DIRECTION

I have to start this with a few quick notes about the direction of this group. I've felt a bit adrift this summer on what kinds of things to do with the group, and that combined with a lot of other things demanding my time has meant that the group has not been as busy.

I've put down more detailed thoughts in this message post, including more about mechanic workshops and rides, if you are interested, but here's the bottom line for this email: We need to get back more into monthly meetings, and I'm going to go with social and general topic meetings for now. (Why?)

There are three ways you can give me feedback on what you would like to see us do:

1) Vote on what kinds of meetings you want. This poll was conducted last May, and it has somewhat informed what I've attempted to do this summer, which is different from what I concentrated on last year. However, only 19 people voted in it, so I'm not sure how seriously to take it. Let me know your thoughts!

2) When during the week is best for you to meet? What do you know, another poll! This one only had 13 respondents, and it is from 3 years ago, so chances are good that you still ought to vote on it!

3) Suggest and Vote on specific ideas: This a brand spankin' new feature Meetup just added. You can suggest an idea for a meeting, and also vote on ones already suggested. I've put in 4 ideas that have come up in the past, to get us started, but please also suggest your own, and vote on them! On the site, see the light bulb icon underneath the Meetup notice on the home page.

It would be nice to get at least 50 respondents to the Kinds of Meetings and When to Meet polls! (That would still only be 20% of our membership.) It's only two questions, so if you haven't, please vote on them now!

> FEATURED CONTENT

Avoiding the Door Zone - A real eye-opening (door-opening?) video by the Education Director of the League of American Bicyclists about how much room cyclists really need, and the perils of all those door-zone bike lanes that some cities have.

What I Did on My Summer Vacation - Tell us about it, and if you have pictures, post them on our Summer Vacation album. Bike-related good but not required.

Pedal-Powered Buick Regal Runs Afoul of Law in Toronto - Just a funny video.
