Nesika Backpack seminar

Trails Club of Oregon has a lodge above Multnohma falls named Nesika where they will be hosting their yearly backpacking seminar. Nesika is a very beautiful lodge with all the amenities for a great over night wilderness experience. All food is included (and it is very good food) also you will be sleeping in a bunk bed, you only need to bring a sleeping bag, snacks and water for the 3 mile 1500' elevation hike to the lodge. Once at the lodge everything you need is provided. The guest speakers every year are hard core backpackers where you will learn a wealth of light weight, practical, and very good backpacking advice they will be sharing. There will be optional day hikes up to Larch Mt. and other locations in the area. This is a fun and relaxing weekend to get away and visit a hidden gem in the Multnohma basin few people know about. You may get out and explore the area or just sit by the large fireplace with a cup of coffee and cookies. We will hike up Saturday morning, 3 miles, 1500' and return Sunday afternoon. You will be asked to help with some chores, cooking, washing dishes or hauling fire wood. The cost for the overnight stay at Nesika,  lunch and dinner Saturday, breakfast and lunch Sunday is 45$ This is an awesome deal, the food and homemade deserts every year are great. The paypal is not set up right now to pay online so we will have to do this the old fashion way. When you rsvp you will need to send me a check made out to Linda Conrad for 45.00$ They buy all the food and make the preparations in advance so it is very important they know the total number of people to prepare for. You can get a refund if you cancel two weeks in advance, that is when they start buying the food. Check out Trails Club web site http://www.trailsclub.org/index.html

I am setting a date of Octember 13 for everyone to have the check to me or you will be put on the wait list. This is necessary for Trails Club to plan and prepare the food.

This was our most successful backpack seminar ever! A huge thanks to everyone who made this such an inspiring and fun event, especially to our cooks who spent all day on their feet and to the presenters, some of whom traveled from California to share with us.

Hey, not to hijack this event, but I'm heading up to Nesika Saturday morning. Need to be at the gate off Larch Mtn road by 9AM. I Signed up for this a few weeks ago via the trails club. I will be driving straight to the lodge since I have a tight schedule this weekend and will not be hiking up this year. I have an extra space since my partner couldn't make it. If anyone is interested in foregoing the hike and leaving relatively early on Sunday let me know. Just bring $45 for the event. You may want to bring a tent since our spots were not guaranteed a shelter. I will be coming from the Beaverton area, so if you're on the way out there give me a call!

  • Aubrey

Pete- just got my check off today. It should get there by the 13th, but please don't bump me if it's late!! Thanks! =)

    October 11, 2012

  • Zachary

Pete's 100% correct- the manual waiting list isn't perfect, but it is what it is. Due to the issues that Pete mentioned about the PHMGs historical usage of automatic waiting lists (and the resulting unintentional no shows), I'm loathe to go back to using them.

    1 · October 5, 2012

  • Pete

Leaders do not like any kind of wait list, the automatic would be the most fair but it leads to many no shows because people cancel late and the ones that get bumped up have other plans because they are not on the hikes and do not check their status on the attending list. This leads to you getting marked with a no show (yes this is tracked and looked at). The manual means you have to put forth a small amount of effort to sign up and are more likely to show up. Neither way is perfect but it is the best we have. I do not have a smart phone so I also miss out on many hikes. I would suggest that you come to one of the monthly meetings and talk to some of the leaders about how this works and offer any thoughts you may have.

Because someone already took the spot before you tried.

    October 5, 2012

  • Dave

Same issue here. Spots come open, but because it's not an automatic bump-up to "attending" then only the people with smart phones, who get instant email notification of a vacancy, have the chance to RSVP. I've been on the waiting list for a while, and would likely have been bumped up by now, but keep getting passed up by others whose original RSVP was after mine.
Most meetup groups operate with automatic bump-up from "waiting" to "attending", so people are confirmed in the order that they RSVP'd.

I just noticed their is a spot on this seminar. Why CAN"T I have the ability to say I am going. Please clarify this problem that continues to happen. It doesn't give me the option to say YES!!

Since I am new to all this and the event is Nov...just wondering if there is anything in particular, clothes wise, that would be good for me to look into or bring...

    October 3, 2012

    • Pete

Michelle, You should get into the pratice of never wearing anything cotton, especially in the fall and winter while out hiking. The lodge where we are staying will have heat so no need for a lot of extra clothes. You should watch the weather forcast and dress accordingly. Don't forget to bring a sleeping bag.

I got an e-mail that their is an opening. How do I reply to take it. Also Pete what is your e-mail address? Let know asap

    October 3, 2012

    • Zachary

There's a manual waiting list on this hike. When a spot opens up, everyone on the waiting list gets an automatic e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person to RSVP for the spot, whether on the waiting list or not, gets it.
